Adam-Idol14ab

September was a month full of surprises – Adam on Idol, Adam out and about and then to wrap up the month, the announcement of the UK and European Q+AL tour in early 2015. Can’t wait to see what October has in store! In the meantime, we’ll continue with the weekly walk down memory lane and revisit the summer’s concerts.

Enjoy the chat!

I love that Adam buys pre-owned cars! And a relatively new Bentley will have a good resale value when Adam decides to move on…not sure where you go from a Bentley, though.

He is so practical about money. Dunno why I love that so much, but I do.

The shorts make me think about National Harbor for the Trespassing nontour. Baggy shorts are definitely not his best look and his legs aren’t his best feature, and he is adorably flatfooted. I like the dork photos and the incredible contrast with um, some of the others. Another aspect of his realness.

luval, you were probably pretty close on most items, but the flip flops look like Havainas, about $26-30.

    Hi nkd! Kiss

I was wondering about those flip-flops.

    Adam wearing Flip Flops?!

    99 cents at the drugstore?

I didn’t think so and now I know better. Wink

Aw, I am so glad that you still like the key chains that I brought you Big Smile I always see these fun ones for sale but they are so big and heavy that I can’t see carrying them around. I am still using the silver Hamsah that I got when I first came here over 40 years ago and I guess it is doing its work.

The wonderful thing about the key chain is that I carry it in my hand every day and, every day, I think of you. You’re always with me.

I like Sam Smith’s voice, I like his album. I would go see him in concert but not travel the world to go see him nor pay the $275 for a ticket to see him in Houston at the House of Blues.

He’s 22 years old and writes and sings with so much emotion. Maybe he hasn’t been in a relationship, but his heart has been broken. You can hear it.
No, he’s not the same type of artist as Adam, but I like lots of different types of music.

On that Roger Taylor interview posted a couple of days ago there were links to different performances. There was one of Roger’s songs called “Sunny Day”. I love it! It was from his album that he put out last year. There’s also another called “Say It’s Not True” with Jeff Beck. So good! They are mellow.

I thought the song “Moondance” was from the 1950’s. I was surprised to realize that Van Morrison wrote and released it in 1970!

Totally out of my comfort zone but I gave it a shot …

    ITA nkd.

IMHO, it is unfair to judge people on how they come out. An awful lot of people did that to Adam and it hurt him, not only in terms of the success of his first cd but also inside. I really believe that. In an interview in late 2009 he was asked about the last time he cried. He said he was watching a specific Gossip Girl episode, which I had watched, too. It was the Monday after Thanksgiving Weekend 2009; one week after the AMA’s. He had spent the prior two weeks rehearsing for the AMA’s, dealing with the OUT magazine fall-out and then a massive promo campaign, complete with ABC ban in the middle. Then his mother and brother joined him for Thanksgiving.

That Monday night he had watched the episode alone in his hotel room. IMHO it was likely the first time he was alone with his thoughts since OUT, the AMA’s and ABC.

That episode was sad but imho that’s not why he cried. It was just a trigger.

I cannot bring myself to do to anyone what other people did to Adam.

I have no opinion on SS beyond liking “Stay With Me” but that Gawker article really bothered me because it had so many echoes of the way they treated Adam.

Gawker has a history of commissioning take-downs of emerging gay artists for not being “totally honest about who they are”. In case anyone missed what they had to say about Adam:

    http://gawker.com/5272627/adam-lambert-is-hurting-gay-america

    http://gawker.com/5284462/adam-lambert-gay-as-he-wanna-be

Richard Lawson’s name is etched on my Brian for his totally disparaging treatment of Adam though-out AI8. He has since left Gawker but they haven’t changed their modus operandi.

They don’t care whether these guys, who had both, coincidentally, been on a recent cover of Rolling Stone, are too gay (Adam) or not gay enough (Sam). They just hire writers from whichever side of the cultural divide they need to do their worst; then they thrive on the hits.

I can take or leave Sam Smith but I’m going to judge him on his music. To me he’s a singer.

To me, Adam is much, much more, in part because he has always defended people’s right to be who they are. That includes Sam as well as Raja.

  27. TLKC says:

The best excuse I have ever heard was: “My favourite actress got married and I need some time alone to deal with it.”

Since Adam, I’m a bit more sympathetic to that kind of emotional investment, though I would never miss work because he got married; unless he married a girl, in which case I might need to take a long lunch.

  28. TLKC says:

Thanks Kradamour. Except for the part where I wrote: “Richard Lawson’s name is etched on my Brian“. I meant brain but I guess Brian is etched on my brain, too.

  30. riskylady says:

I really don’t think I said anything that would make Sam Smith (or Frank Ocean) cry, on the remote possibility they would read this Adam Lambert blog. And neither has had to endure even a minute amount of the speculation and scrutiny and endless questioning and opinionating that Adam went through throughout Idol, after Idol and for the next couple of years. It only started to die down around 2012 IMHO.
The Gawker thing was posted simply as an FYI, though I do find his opinions so early in the game somewhat precocious.
And I think I’m allowed to not care for his music, I think he has a nice voice too but not extraordinary, but I’m not the only one. I’m aware some of us do like him, and that’s great.
There are all kinds of opinions here, about Adam’s music, Queen, Glee, etc. Just sayin’.

  31. riskylady says:

ETA: I like many other kinds of music too, even some country and lots of classical.

  32. Kradamour says:

risky, I don’t think anyone had your post in particular in mind – I know that I didn’t – just making the point that being suspicious of someone’s level of gayness or motivation in coming out or (fill in the blank) is irrelevant and not ours to determine, just the music, like it or don’t like it.

TLKC, I didn’t even see the typo ‘Brian’ perhaps because my son’s name is Brian and I am forever mixing the two words when I type…and my spellcheck will then capitalize it. Exasperating!

  33. nkd says:

riskylady, my post wasn’t directed at you or anyone in particular, just at the talk of SS.
Variety makes life interesting, in music and opinions! Kiss

I do hate the berating that Sam has gotten in the press for being himself.
I don’t follow him closely so I don’t see it all, but some of what I have seen seems unfair, as it was for Adam. Why?
A young gay man obviously can’t do it right. Confused
Such a shame when they are just trying to be and live in that post-gay world where one is not defined by their sexuality, rather it’s part of who they are.

Sam has stated, as Adam did, that he wants it to be about the music, as it should.
    Maybe one day.

Sam is so young, I forgive him a few mistakes.

  34. milwlovesadam says:

Nkd, and risky, I agree with both of your posts. I agree that in general we should wait and see how this young man evolves as a performer.

All I know is that when I saw him for the first time on SNL I immediately came here and posted about him. He was a female Adele, with a fantastic and soulful voice, and loads of style, I speculated he was gay, and that Adam would probably like his voice/songs.

I don’t give two hoots that he’s gay, how he came out, whether he had any relationships ( BTW, he told RS that his album was written about his first love, which never really came to be a lasting, true relationship, but, it was a relationship ).

I like that he and Adam have met several times, I like that Adam has had discussions with him about navigating the press and public as an out gay performer.

I do believe that Adam has suffered because of when he came out ( the year ) and that he has paved the road for performers like Sam.

Now, I do like his voice, and I agree that he needs to do more than just stand and sing, however, Adele did just that and took it to the bank. Big time.

Sam has been working on his next album, and has said it will be more upbeat. Yes, nkd, his current album is about real heart-break. You can hear the pain in his voice and lyrics.

Agree nkd. It needs to be about the music.

I would love to see him in my hometown, and would pay up to 50 bucks. Not gonna travel for him or book a hotel room.

Trying to build up my Adam fund again. Mama needs to see her boy!

  35. riskylady says:

My first quibble is with timing Of coming out. Adam was out, but “re-outed” himself waaaay before his album, the AMAs, etc. but that didn’t stop all the pressure, questions, etc.
Have never seen the phrase “openly-gay SS” or “openly-gay FO” (which he’s not, anyway) constantly in use.
My other quibble is statements like this:

“I would say just be yourself. Just be yourself. And don’t make it an issue, do you know what I mean? If others around you are making it an issue, I understand, fight for your rights of course. But also let’s make it a normality. To make it equal we need to kind of act equal, if you get what I mean.”

Acting equal is blending in. For some, it’s almost impossible. And they shouldn’t have to. At some point, post-gay will be what Adam has called for, society respecting the Diversity in the gay community. Those who are feminine, macho, androgynous too. That to me is the struggle.
It’s lovely that he’s riding a wave now, while blending in. He even called himself brave.
Real Post-gayness will come from the real brave ones, risk-takers like Adam. IMHO. No changing of song lyrics. And his music is still loved by plenty of straight people.

  36. nkd says:

risky, I don’t have a problem with that statement. Perhaps we are interpreting it differently.
Acting equal is not necessarily acting straight.
I don’t see Sam hiding from anything. He’s probably always been out and doesn’t give it a second thought.
People come in many different flavors. I happen to think Sam is mostly vanilla. Big Smile

  37. nkd says:

Yup mils, I’d like to see him in concert in my town too. And yeah $50 is about my top price.

  38. riskylady says:

nkd, I know he’s not hiding. He’s fine. The flak he’s getting is for criticising other “more gay” or more flamboyant gays. I think it’s similar to what Aiken did. And I have never heard Adam criticise anyone of any part of the spectrum.
And, Smith comes from the UK where things are a little different.
Anyway, it’s all just a matter of opinion and no worries. Just wanted to clarify.

  39. nkd says:

I haven’t heard those kind of statements from Sam. Hmmm.
Like I said, I don’t follow him closely.

  40. milwlovesadam says:

All in all, I just get the feeling from Sam that he simply needs some time and life experiences to grow up a bit. He’s only 21 or 22. I hear periodically that he says something on twitter and then deletes it. He says things in interviews that he later regrets or are misinterpreted.

Maybe the best lesson he can learn from Adam is how to have a better filter.

Ha!! Adam had a filter problem early on too, didn’t he?

I’m in the “cut SS some slack” boat. He’s a a young and very talented guy. He just needs time to ripen some more.

  41. nkd says:

I agree mils. I was thinking of how Adam might have reacted to these same situations and questions at such a young age. He was a bit more mature with more biz experience by the time he was on AI and in the public and media spotlight.

  42. milwlovesadam says:

True nkd. He also said , even on AI, many times, that he couldn’t have handled the fame at a younger age. I mean, at 21-22, wasn’t he on that cruise ship? He was a mere babe.

  43. milwlovesadam says:

On another note, how are you liking AHS? Wonder how many Twisties there will be on Halloween. Also wonder if Adam is watching yet.

  44. nkd says:
