Adam Lambert is an artist who does not need to be portrayed much at this time. His career gained momentum after he reached the finals of the eighth series of the American Idol program. Later, there were singles such as Whataya Want From Me and Ghosttown, which topped the charts, platinum CDs, and lots of music awards. His fan club drastically increased when he went on tour with the band Queen, with whom he performs to this day. On March 20, his latest album Velvet was released, and the artist will soon visit Poland during the tour promoting the publishing house.
Before the interview, I was a little stressed because I was about to talk to a large-caliber artist, so when the phone rang, I quickly turned on two voice recorders and waited for him to speak. At the beginning his manager contacted me saying that he would redirect me to Adam. I felt a mix of excitement and fear, but there was no turning back. Suddenly I heard a voice, which I heard more than once watching interviews with Adam, saying cheerful “Hello!”.
Hi Adam! How do you do?
I am sitting at home in LA, but everything is fine. I follow the government’s recommendations and isolate myself from society like everyone else.
You weren’t afraid to release the album now, given that the possibilities for promotion are quite limited?
This is a difficult question, because everything has already been prepared. When all this madness began, we were a bundle of nerves, but it was too late to stop the release of this album. However, we had to quickly come up with a new way to promote it. Also, most people now spend time at home, so releasing new music doesn’t seem like such a bad idea. The only difficulty now is to think of a way I can promote it.
Your new album is entitled Velvet. I heard you came up with this name before the song of the same title was made. Why just Velvet?
I was thinking about a word that would perfectly match the songs I recorded. They are cheerful, sensual and kept in a retro style, so I thought what about the physical world suits me such sound. Then I came up with Velvet and I decided it was a great word for the album title.
The sound of your new album is far from your previous releases. You can hear the influence of the 70s music here, but kept in a modern style. Why did you choose this musical direction?
You know, when I started working on this album, I was already a little bored with typical songs from the top of the charts. The music that I like came from artists and bands who risked and did something different, something that stands out. Being inspired by them, I decided to take this direction with this album, I always liked music from the 70s. Most of the artists I admire were creating at that time. This music is classics. She always inspired me. Then I realized that the songs from those times were the best, and thanks to this music I decided to become an artist. That’s why I went back in time and got some sound.
We had to wait about 4 years for this album. Why was the creation process so long?
I wanted to take a break. At first I didn’t know what I wanted to do. It was a time when I met creators and producers. It wasn’t until I recorded a few songs that I knew in which direction I wanted to go and then it was easier to explain to producers what sound I wanted to achieve.
So this style of the 70s was not the first idea for the album, it was only born during the creation process?
At the beginning I didn’t know what style I wanted to take. When I entered the studio with Tommy Englishe and recorded the song Superpower, it was the moment when I decided that this is how the whole album should sound. I chose real instruments and funky rhythm.
How many songs were more or less recorded during the session for this album?
I’d say about thirty.
Recently, in one of the interviews you said that you would like to play the role of George Michael in a biographical film. Why exactly he?
To be clear, I was just asked if I was to play someone in a biographical film whom I would like to play. I love George Michael, but I was provoked after the post. That was just the answer to the question. George was amazing, he was a great artist and songwriter. He was great.
Could you reveal who inspired the song On The Moon?
Umm … The inspiration was simply sex. It was not concrete.
Soon you are going on a concert tour during which you will also visit Poland in September. Which of the new songs are you most looking forward to performing live?
Hard to say. I think it’s On the Moon, but it’s difficult for me to decide on one. Roses, Velvet … I’m very happy to finally be able to present these songs live.
You had to reschedule your Las Vegas performances to October, and a European tour is already planned for August and September. Are you not afraid that you will have to postpone these concerts if this epidemic does not end so far?
Unfortunately, it is possible. We have to wait and see what experts say on this topic. People’s life and safety is the most important thing. If it were to happen that we would postpone the concerts, I think everyone would understand. Music has the gift of healing, especially in times like this. I really want to go on tour and be able to share music that makes them feel better.
Do you plan to play any concerts through live broadcasts as many artists are doing on Instagram or another platform now?
I really like this idea, but the problem is that I don’t play any instrument, so it wouldn’t be the easiest task for me. I have to think of a way to download music to my home.
In 2018, it got loud about you after your excellent performance in honor of Cher during the 41st Kennedy Center Honors gala. You made her cry with emotion. Were you able to exchange a word with her after the ceremony?
Unfortunately not, because right after the gala she had to fly very quickly to the premiere of her musical The Cher Show on Broadway, which took place the next day. However, I got a wonderful email from her manager and it made me very happy.
How does it feel to hear a compliment from such a legend?
Awesome. As soon as I heard about the opportunity to perform at this ceremony, I was very excited. From the very beginning I knew that I wanted to sing Believe, but in my own way I was very happy with the later reaction of the people.
Do you like watching your performances on Youtube?
I was watching this one. Sometimes I like to watch something, but it depends on the performance.
I know that many people, including myself, do not like their own voice on recordings. I wonder if you like listening to yours.
Yes, but I’m usually quite strict with myself. I am my greatest critic. It’s quite a personal matter, because sometimes where I see a mistake, others don’t notice it.
Is there anything you’d like to say to your Polish fans?
Thank you very much for always supporting me. I can’t wait for me to come and play for you. I want you to hear Velvet live.

Adam Lambert released his brand new album “Velvet” on Friday . The long player will be released six months after the EP “Velvet: Side A”, which will also be part of the long player. The album was written by Adam Lambert together with busbee, Jeremy Dussolliet, Tim Sommers and Ryan Daly and was produced by busbee, Ryan Daly and Tim “One Love” Sommers. The album also contains the singles “Superpower” and “Roses” featuring Nile Rogers.
The video for the new single “Velvet”, the title track of the album, was released on the same day. Directed by Charlotte Rutherford and Adam immersed himself in the clip as a tailor into the fashion and gossip world of the 70s and 80s.

Adam will go on his “The Velvet Tour” through Europe this autumn, which also includes Manchester Pride on August 30th and the Wembley Arena in London on September 1st. Before that, Adam will delight fans in Europe with “The Rhapsody with Queen” (Queen + Adam Lambert) as part of the sold out shows.
In addition to his music, Adam founded “The Feel Something Foundation”, his own non-profit organization that works for LGBTI rights. The “Feel Something Foundation” would like to offer support for a variety of problems that primarily affect the queer community and will work with charity organizations that have set themselves the task of projects with a direct focus on education & the arts, homelessness and mental health ‘to implement. The “Feel Something Foundation” wants to continue to abolish the term “coming out” as a description of when you just “are yourself”. (cw / pm)
