Spectacle and pomp, along with some truly powerful, killer Queen classic rock, was the order of the day at Queen’s DC show last night with my date Kelly Houk. The centerpiece was American Idol champ Adam Lambert who, as he has been for the 6 years he’s played with Queen, was charming, self-effacing and clearly talented. Early on, he took a minute to say, “I know I’m not Freddie, I mean, please!” and talk about how honored he was; that was a smart tactic, reminding people and especially die-hard fans that he wasn’t trying to be the irrepleaceable Mercury. Lambert primped and posed through 8 costume changes, rode a pink three wheeled Bicycle, sat on a huge robot head in platform shoes, stalked and danced, and just seemed to have a really good time, not like he was just going through the motions. He also seemed sincerely reverent of the legendary men he shared the stage with, another appealing element, he often lavished praise on the original members without seeming placating, and even knelt down and bowed as he handed a guitar to Brian May. And his voice didn’t mimic Freddie’s, he used his pretty spectacular pipes to add his own thing while still doing justice to the originals. Killer Queen was a standout, and Somebody To Love (see below) was a highlight too, with Lambert, May and Roger Taylor out on the ramp clearly enjoying themselves, Taylor and Lambert trading vocals. As for May, the 70 year old still has his phenomenal and unique chops, I was watching him most of the night and he was fabulous, hasn’t lost much if anything it seemed. A David Gilmouresque 10 minute epic solo up 30 feet on a lift was mesmerizing, and all night May reminded everyone why he still is one of rock’s greatest guitarists. His solo acoustic turn on a stool at the end of the guitar shaped ramp on Mercury’s beautiful Love Of My Life was the evening’s most poignant moment. May’s fellow survivor Roger Taylor was also in fine form, both on drums and singing, and proved his mettle all night. The last song Bohemian Rhapsody gave everyone goosebumps as a filmed Mercury sang along with Lambert, and the encore of We Are The Champions replete with fountains of yellow confetti was a fitting end to a night full of superb showmanship and yes, still great rock and roll. Fans will always miss Freddie, but his old mates and their flamboyant young singer would have made the late lead singer smile that trademark Freddy smile, big and wide.

Another great concert and, sadly, the last one of our four concert marathon. While the rest of our group were appearing in videos taken at the B stage, I was sitting in row 3 of the risers in the first section next to the right side of the stage. When Adam came over to the right side stage, he was practically in my lap. Well not quite, but close enough. I also had a great view of a particularly steamy GDML. One of my partners in my former medical practice was sitting with me. She had never seen Queen or Adam live, although she has always liked Queen’s music. She really loved the show and was blown away by Adam’s voice. But the funniest observation that this usually reserved woman made occurred after about three songs when she said, “He has a tight ass!” I totally cracked up and said that, yes, it was a fine ass indeed! After many years of looking at the Adam posters hanging in my office, she finally understood, much to my delight, what all the fuss was about.
Thanks to my lovely travel companions who kept me laughing and stuffed full of delicious food during this marathon, luval, nkd, mils, riskylady, cwm & adamized. Also a big thanks to our other ALL friends who joined us for dinner and shows along the way, firsttimerob, sparkle, asif & glambot.
