   I didn’t want to say anything about Ron’s brush with death on Sunday night because I thought he might not want to say anything about it himself but he really was choking. When he started choking, he did something you should NEVER do – he got up and walked away to avoid embarrassment. We were all sitting in a booth and only I could see him. I got up and followed him and suddenly realize that he was in real trouble.

   I ran to the waiter and as I passed the booth I said to Adamized and mmm222: “He’s choking to death!” Of course mmm222 got up and did her magic. By the time the waiter got there she had things under control.

   Thank goodness she was there!

   If you are ever in that situation DO NOT walk into a corner or a washroom to sort yourself out. You need people around you to be aware of what is happening.

   P.S. mmm222 gave several lessons in how to perform the manouver so we are all up-to-speed now!

   The Toronto Sun is the “Wendy Whiner” of newspapers but their article yesterday was pretty wonderful, even though the photo was out-of-date. They loved him! They really loved him!

   P has a wonderful still shot of the Sun photographer down in the pit taking photos. What happened to all of his photo’s? Does The Sun use them next time?

   It was obvious right away, of course, that Ron was choking. I was observing him for the first 10-15 seconds to see if he was moving any air. If someone aspirates something liquid or solid and is coughing and moving air, you just let them cough it up. If they are not moving any air, as was the case with Ron, you do the Heimlich maneuver. Once was enough to dislodge the food enough for him to cough it up. If not, I would have repeated it. If nothing else had worked, I would have resorted to plan B (a tracheotomy), which I could have easily accomplished. There was no way I would have allowed dear Ron to depart from our presence.

   The moral of this story is: choose your dinner companions wisely!

   May I add, seriously, as a professional, also trained and working with these issues every day, what Ron experienced was terrifying for him. His reaction was NORMAL. It’s called fight or flight, it’s a reflex. I’m just so glad that it happened in the presence of a friend who is a trained professional. But anyone can take a Red Cross CPR class and learn how to do the Heimlich Maneuver.

   It can come in pretty handy when you least expect it.

   Even to a Glambert! !
