Yes, @foxvegas is posting these to several fan accounts. I just updated tonight’s poster because it had Brian wearing a Korean t-shirt – not really appropriate for Japan!

Can a queen without Freddie Mercury and John Deacon be a queen? No, neither Freddie nor John are on stage, just invisible. Queen + Adam Lambert (hereinafter QAL) came to the audience at a performance in Japan at the Saitama Super Arena on January 25 and 26, 2020.

When the Rhapsody Tour began in 2019, many old fans were amazed at the set list. Compared to the tours so far, the width of the songs played has become extremely wide. There is a song that I thought never entered. This is a song selection that has served old fans as the number of new fans has increased due to the hit of the movie “Bohemian Rhapsody”. After all it was good to be a fan of Her Majesty. I thought so.

But at the same time, many fans thought, “It would be hard to come to Japan on this set list.” There are “hold hands” and “born to love you” that are not played elsewhere in Japan. To put this in, I expected that my favorite Ano song and the second favorite Kono song would be cut off. What about that? When you opened the lid, you did almost all the songs. After all it was good to be a fan of Her Majesty the Queen. I thought so.

By the way, please keep in mind that this column contains a lot of spoilers.

    ◆ ◆ ◆

It is difficult to narrow down the highlights of this tour to one, but dare to mention the beauty of the stage equipment using the latest technology. Before the start, it appears that there is only a giant crown on the stage, but it is magical as the overture sounds and the stage set is assembled, revealing the whole picture. The back screen has super-high image quality and almost no time lag, so the immersion is terrible. The theme selection of “Opera” was also good, and I was impressed with the appearance of even the special seating audience placed on the stage with the image of “bar seat”. It was a very natural audience because I was thinking that “Recent CG is three-dimensional.” It may be time to replace the glasses.

Even so, the beginning of “Inuendo” is quite a shock. To be honest, it was a song I didn’t expect to hear at QAL (or rather live). And this is a flashy orchestra arrangement. I was really surprised when I heard the miscellaneous tuning sounds of the orchestra and the sound of the baton hitting the music stand.

Why was this opening song “Inu Endo”? It may be because the orchestra simply shines and fits the theme of “opera”. Or perhaps he brought the title song from Freddie’s last album, Inuendo (1991), to make him more aware of his existence. By not using the original song version, it seems to be directing “Queen after Freddie’s death”. At any rate, the appearance of the “Opera” with a majestic Arabic march is so cool that it loses its language.

The story that started with Now I’m Here was just a flood of music and light. Adam Lambert’s throat, “New man,” is in great shape. Perfect eye make-up and glamorous fashion are all about the crunch. The sound of the band centered on Brian May and Roger Taylor is also in good shape, and there are a number of hit songs such as “ Driving to Hell ”, “ Don’t Stop Me Now ”, “ The Desire of Love ” There is no reason not to get excited. The order of the songs was different on the first day and the second day, but both felt a deep commitment to the connection between the songs, and the whole performance seemed to be a single opera work.

The queen’s dynamism with dazzling lighting and gimmicks feels more like a 2020 state-of-the-art band than a “band hit in the 1970s”. Brian, who looks more energetic than he was when he was young, and Roger, who wears the astringency appropriate for his age and has increased his coolness, are unabated. Adam is full of youthful (but arafo) energy, and support members such as Neil Fairclaw (B), Spike Edney (Key), and Tyler Warren (Per) have skillful choruses. While doing, it strongly supports the back.

Adam’s theatrical performance was not “feeling for all ages” than the 2016 performance in Japan, but it was still sexy. In “Killer Queen”, he sits on a grand piano and plays a melodrama while flapping a fancy fan, and in a tragic “All in Love”, he smiles and expresses deep loneliness. In “Bicycle Race,” which appeared in a Rob Halford-style outfit, even riding on a “bike” is sexy. Well, Adam, isn’t it a “bike”, right? You have an engine, right?

Adam sings “Live Forever” is one of QAL’s biggest highlights. Adam, who has perfect range, voice volume and voice quality, is a very good ballad with rich expression. Among them, “Live Forever” is finished as rumored by old fans that “Is it beyond Freddy?” The audience, who forgot to cheer and listen to the singing voice, will be the artist’s greatest tribute.

By the way, in this live, before “Live Forever”, the sound source of “Take My Breath Away” recorded in “Splendid Race” (1977) was inserted. The song was not used in the movie, and the impression of the tie-up was light, so many people would not know it. For fans of the past, the use of this song, which echoed Freddie’s singing voice, was a surprise like “Inuendo”.

However, the use of the song was not only a surprise but also a tearing production. “Take My Breath Away” is not originally a song that has any special meaning to the band. However, when thinking of “Freddie’s death, the queen left, the one who left the stage, the two who keep walking”, the words “Take me all” are too painful.

In response, Adam stood alone and sang “Live Forever,” saying, “You have touched my world and we can live forever.” This was a respect and love for Freddie, as well as the swearing of Adam carrying Queen.

In this performance, surprises were prepared in addition to “Inuendo” and “Take My Breath Away”. “I’m in love with my car” sung by Roger in “Dragon Attack” with the introduction of band members. The “cars” were loud and cheerful, but many were overwhelmed by the husky singing power. Even so, Roger Taylor, who just says “Hai” and removes his sunglasses and screams yellow, is amazing. No, I said, “Choo!”

However, the first surprise may have been “39” sung by Brian at the acoustic corner. In recent years he sings one or two songs including “Love of My Life”. In Japan, I play “hold hands”, so I can’t listen to other songs. Many people thought so. So when the above two songs were over and Brian asked, “Would you like to sing another song?” I was able to understand why overseas fans are saying, “It’s all about Japan.”

“’39” started in that way. The song used to be a simple but bright and lively song sung by four queens in a row. But by 2020, Brian is singing alone at the end of the flower path. The scene seemed lonely, but the crowd illuminating the stage with the light of a smartphone seemed to be the scenery of the “milky sea” described in the lyrics of “’39”.

From the old fans, the performances, performances, and setlists are all the best ever, and the new fans are said to be the best in their life so far in Tokyo (Saitama). It was a luxury time. Any controversy that occurred before it began disappears before the loud strumming music. At the time of Angkor, everyone would have been a fan of “Queen + Adam Lambert”.

Brian and Roger, who continue to be “queens” after Freddie’s death, are sometimes criticized. Many fans have rejected Adam, who did not resemble Freddie. Well, that’s what “critics are rightly”. Some Japanese do not like rice and some British do not like tea.

But QAL’s live isn’t “Freddie and John’s live without John” in the first place. Their live is a “festival” to convey the memory and soul of the artist contained in the song itself to people all over the world and to praise its glory. Adam always speaks of his love and respect for Freddie on the stage, stating that he is not a “substitute for Freddie.” Everywhere in the production, there is a mechanism that connects the “past queen” and the “present queen”, so that John who has left the front stage will not be kept away. Rather, they still feel the illusion of being there and playing together.

“Two people, who should not be there, feel like they are there,” seemed stale and lie. But you know when you go. In the stadium, you will be convinced that “the Freddie’s soul is still present in this world” if you are illuminated by the light leaking from the stage and immersed in the falling music. And Queen loves Adam Lambert. Continue to Osaka and Nagoya performances. I want you to meet your own “queen”.
