Ok finally, a recap of my AMAZING on-stage odyssey!!
We all went to dinner at a nearby Spanish/Portuguese restaurant at 5 pm, but I had to be at the venue at 5:50 to sign in for the backstage event and to pick up rs‘s VIP ticket, in hopes of selling it. So after a hurried salad I departed, to the disapproval of the restaurant staff, and walked over to the Prudential Center. Got there at 5:45 and already there were 2 lines, one for VIP and one short one for backstage (only 10 seats) so was quickly given my badge, special red wristband with “Queen + Adam Lambert Onstage VIP” written on it. (Sadly, I had to leave rs’s ticket there and could no longer go outside for security reasons, so it perished there…) Signed a waiver promising not to wander looking for band an acknowledging NO meet and greets included.
First, our little group of 9 only was led to the merchandise table for “crowd-free” shopping, where I picked up shirts for me and hubby and a couple of our ALL group. Next, upstairs to the VIP lounge for drinks and snacks. We had two drink vouchers, so didn’t have to buy. Lovely fresh veggies, several dips, miniature tamales, tortillas with chorizo, spinach pastries, veggie tarts.
Then, at 6:55 pm we were grouped again and with a front and back escort, shepherded through the crowd downstairs which came in at 7 to the backstage area. There, our adorable guide turned us over to the stage manager, a very cute 30-something Brit. First, we passed the kitchen and band chef to the video and sound station and the lovely Steve Price, aka Baby Jesus Films of pre-show banana fame (babyjesusfilms on Instagram). His equipment is mind boggling – he controls the video feeds to the screens and the camera people on the floor. And what gets recorded for Queen. Many many screens! He was very proud that now has two girls manning cameras out on the floor along with the guys. The sound feed guy has a huge stack od monitors with more controls than a 727.
We continued along seeing all the wheeled carts and many trunks where the set is packed for the trucks and shipment, then reached a small dead end with a few doors labeled “band lounge”, Adam, Brian, Roger, “massage room” where we were stopped and told to wait, presumably for someone to pass by uninterrupted. To be continued……

Haha, well, here it is three weeks later, so, continuing my recap:
We stood in this white hallway with our custodians, mystified. Doors opened and Tyler the percussionist walked by, waved to us, then Neil did the same.
Then, two double doors opened and *G.A.S.P.* BRIAN MAY WALKED OUT, ARMS WIDE AND SMILING, saying “Hello, my VIPs!” and gathering us into a group hug!!!!!!!
I cannot describe the instant JOY we all felt! It was soooo unexpected! One Glambert began sobbing immediately and continued the whole time, while apologising and trying to stop. When we separated from the hug he immediately pointed to my lovely sparkly Queen Tiara (gift from mils which got lots of love at every concert), saying he loved it. He then gave me a big Adam-quality hug and another fan took our pic. Then he chatted, signed and took more pics with everyone. Just before leaving, he came over and gave me another hug. I said “I LOVE you!” (No shame Grin ). He thanked me, but then I added, “But I love Adam just a TEENIE bit more…” I have no idea why my conscience forced these words out of my mouth lol. But he looked down right in my eyes and said, “I’ll settle for that!” with a little smile.
The man is so slim which makes him look even taller, but he looks great, very healthy with good color. And so so sweet and generous. Spent about 15 minutes with us.
CONFESSION: I have had a sort of intellectual/musical crush on Brian since I first found Queen. He’s always been my fave, his intelligence, his playing, his poetic look, singing voice and his gorgeous songs. So you can imagine what a HIGH this produced, as I NEVER EVER expected to meet him.
    *sigh*
Moving on. After this amazing experience, we floated along on our now cloud of happiness past the roadies’ Candy Station – a table loaded with HUGE jars of M&Ms, Skittles, assorted cookies and candy bars – which our guide said keeps them perky and energetic! We arrived at the door out to the stage and were given our rules: Pics ok, no videoing. Don’t touch the VERY VERY DELICATE AND EXPENSIVE electronic curtain projector. Then he gave us loads of info: The crew is 60 full-time members, they travel in 5 luxury buses. At each location, 60 more locals are hired to help put up and take down the stage and set. Takes 3 1/2 hrs up, 2 1/2 hrs down, with all 120 guys working non-stop. There are 16 trucks, going to each location. There is ONLY ONE stage set. This one is INFINITELY more complex than the other Q sets. He and most of the crew have been with them since the first 2014 tour. LOVE Queen: Well treated and well paid.
The stage will be sent by ship back to Europe, but most likely flown to Oz/NZ.
Then we were settled into our little platform with 10 folding chairs. Platform is about 18 inches lower than stage, with a railing, nestled behind the guitar wing part of stage on left and Spike’s piano, told we could stand, sit, move chairs. We faced Neil’s place and behind him the percussion set. I stayed a little back, with a clear view between Spike and Neil to stage front and audience.
We also had a smoke machine on the floor near us, and got engulfed from time to time. Cont….

  11. riskylady says:

The audience was in, buzz growing, the energy was palpable. Smoke billowing, several people dashing on and off stage with final touches. Suddenly. Spike Neil and Tyler came by us and took their places, and Roger, Brian and Adam appeared from the other side. The show started!!! The ROAR from the audience was just amazing, I fully appreciate how it feeds the band, it’s like a huge tidal wave of love and it didn’t let up the entire show! Great audience.
None of the graphics are visible from inside the curtain, just rows of little blue lights.
Spike and Neil were very sweet, nodding to us and smiling. Neil would often step back for me so I could see or take pics of Adam.
Bri came over once, smiled and played to us a few seconds.
Now here’s the thing: Adam is BUSY, he is working, and he is in a ZONE. He is ALL OVER that stage, constantly moving, posing, hitting his marks for lighting, etc. He passed within inches of us many many times, would glance at us – looked at us, but not seeing us. And when the stage goes dark between songs, people run in and out like crazy. They refresh Adam’s water, adjust stuff, attach Bri’s harness for his solo, etc. Behind us were Neil’s bass tech and a sound guy with a stack of electronic/digital equalisers. They were a hoot all night.
Surprisingly, the sound even there was glorious! And interesting, as we could clearly hear the harmonising melodies sung by Spike, Neil and Tyler! And just wallowing in the close proximity of Adam for two hours was wonderful. You can tell how focused he is, how he just LIVES his role to the max and is enjoying it 100%. His communion with the band and the audience is almost a physical reality, you can feel it.
And finally, coming off stage right in front of us, he was out of that zone, DID SEE US and smiled at us as he walked by. And by some miracle, I got a pic of that smile!!! GLORIOUS!
I normally don’t take pics, but we were so close I just would aim and tap the camera rapidly trying to get something as he dashed around. Have a ton of pics but haven’t been through them yet.
So. This is why mils had to literally talk me to sleep that night. The high was so strong lol.
If anyone can do this, I recommend it. The experience is just wonderful, seeing the camaraderie on stage from so close is very sweet. It’s so apparent how much they love what they do, and their effort to make the show the best that it can be.
Wish I could do it again!!!
