  10. milwlovesadam says:

The headline is Freddie is Freddie, Let Adam Be Adam.

This just highlights to me how much the reviewer doesn’t get it. This set Adam off on his little rant. The concert is Queen. It pays homage and respect to Freddie. Adam gives it some of his flourishes to be sure, but, it isn’t an Adam Lambert concert. ( Well, to me it is, LOL).

The reviewer in a back-handed way IS supporting Adam, however, I wonder how old he is, if he can remember Freddie and Queen, if he gets the long history of Queen in rock and roll. I guess I’m puzzled by this review and headlines.

It’s interesting that the most troubling review is in Adam’s hometown, where the audience ate him up with a spoon, where he was quite free on stage. Where Brian was clearly enjoying himself in a way I have never seen.

    Gah.

This is a great find by someone on twitter and extremely interesting…

First, a write up about Queen and a review of their concert in Argentina, in Rolling Stone, from 1981:

    http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/queen-holds-court-in-south-america-19810611

Interesting how each of the band members is portrayed, with their different personalities, priorities, and interests. Some of it seems so decadent now! LOL And note that the writer was very negative about their music and their performance.

In response, Roger wrote a scathing retort, which I find very amusing. Go Roger!

    http://www.lettersofnote.com/2011/07/i-pity-you.html

So, obviously, the audiences have always been enamored and devoted, but it is not a new experience for the members of Queen for critics to not “get” them or their music or their showmanship.

    Smile

I can’t even find the words to describe how awesome that photo is on so many levels. LOL!

    Second tweet says “Way worse.”
I couldn’t help it. I replied. “Kind of like your reviews”.
Which could be taken two ways, right? Evil Grin

    https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10203118805189798

Hell, even Freddie had difficulties singing the soaring lines when he was not in such great vocal shape. Adam Lambert’s voice is well suited to the music that was in Freddie’s mind. His vocal facility does not lack in any way the ability to reach what Freddie often could not.

You might enjoy reading through the comments on the LA Times review. Really really great comments – the vast majority from Queen fans and those who have seen the show, who are loving the collaboration and the shows, and articulately and intelligently call this critic out on his bullshit:

Ok, here’s my recap from the LA show.

    Part 1.

First, I have to start off with a pre-show activities.
I am staying at my mom’s house here in LA, and cocoglam’s parents also live in LA not too far from my mom (on the north side of LA), so she came up to visit them, and she and I decided to drive down to the concert in Inglewood (on the south side of LA) together. After I picked her up at her parent’s house, it was a hop, skip, and a jump down Sunset Blvd. into West Hollywood, so we decided to go for a little driving tour and had a blast.

We spotted Bootsy Bellows and Hooray Henry’s. They are both quite discreet, with no signs outside (only the address, so you have to know what you’re looking for). Both were closed at the time, although the door to Bootsy Bellows was open so we peaked inside (it was empty save for one guy who worked for the caterer and let me use the restroom while cocoglam peaked around. Smile ). Cool place! We also saw the large high-rise apartment building where Adam lived last year, which is very prominently situated just off Sunset Blvd, and interestingly just around the corner from Bootsy Bellows. Anyway we had a blast driving around spotting a few of Adam’s various hangouts, and I promise that we weren’t creepy or stalkerish!

We had originally planned to have lunch together then make the drive down to Inglewood to join everyone for dinner at the Sizzler across from the Forum. But we were running low on time and realized we would not have time for lunch. I was worried about cocoglam because she had had nothing to eat all day and it was getting towards 3:00pm, so she directed me to an famous old bakery in Hollywood (Hansen’s Cakes), where the rich and famous get their wedding cakes, children’s birthday cakes, etc., (as well as cocoglam!) and we treated ourselves to some decadent cupcakes to hold us over until we got to Inglewood. Yum!

All the while, cocoglam and I were sharing stories about our Adam encounters and shows we had seen. She has me beat by a mile! Living in the LA area and having a daughter in show business, she has been at all of Adam’s LA-based TV appearances and a bazillion concerts, as well as gotten access to be in the green room for the Jimmy Kimmel show and to be a fly on the wall for one of Adam’s photoshoots (you may remember her posts about this a long time ago). It was great to hear her stories!

  29. cwm says:

Part 2 – the Pre-Show Dinner and Time at the Venue

After cupcakes, cocoglam and I braved the LA traffic down to Inglewood. Although formidable, it wasn’t awful and we got to the Sizzler on time. Lots of wonderful ALLers were there, as well as additional glamberts from IdolForums. We all had enough time to relax and chat over dinner. It was great to meet some new ALLers like rachiel and TexasWannaHoldEm, and to see people I hadn’t seen since last year like cher and aely!

After dinner, off to the venue! A storied venue, LA’s “Fabulous Forum” has been completely refurbished and only recently re-opened. It was really beautiful!

Cocoglam, ladybugs, and I sat together in the first section up from the floor (105). Reese bought our group of four tickets and had originally planned to sit with us, but tchrsd had an extra floor ticket, so Reese knew this was her chance for a close-up experience and grabbed it, with our blessing. Then, right before the show, cher called me and told me that the box office was selling close-up floor tickets that had just been released, which threw cocoglam, ladybugs, and me into fits of last-minute confusion and ambivalence about whether to go for purchasing the floor seats or stay where we were. Well, I discovered the decision was made for us because once we were inside, I couldn’t go back outside to the box office to even check on whether they were still available and still be able to get back in. Ok, decision made! Although not close up, we had a great gestalt view of the stage and good sound, and our seats were great (thanks Reese!).

  30. cwm says:

    Part 3 – The Show!

Well, as you know, the show was epic. Adam was on fire (again), and he, Brian, Roger, and everyone in the band performed with all their hearts. I focused more on the show this time, less on taking pictures and video. It was so obvious how happy both Adam and Brian were to be playing to the LA crowd at the Forum, and Brian’s remarks about this were particularly touching. When Brian introduced Adam (“how do you like the new boy?”), the applause and cheering was long and thunderous, and I was soooo happy for Adam in that moment. He looked very touched and grateful.

Adam sang for the rafters once again, and was flawless. Somebody to Love, Who Wants To Live Forever, and The Show Must Go On were just incredible. He was perfectly delicious again in Killer Queen and his interaction with Brian was perfect. I would say that his performances in San Jose and LA were on about the same par in terms of quality of the performances, but he was just a little sassier and naughtier with the crowd in LA. Which was fun. The audience loved him and embraced him wholeheartedly. There was a great deal of love evident for Brian and for Freddie at every turn, so I knew that this was primarily a Queen crowd, so their enthusiastic response to Adam was wonderful. Smile Lots of laughs and appreciation for his banter, his jokes (“I like it when love sucks!”), his wonderful sassiness (e.g. chiding the audience in the All Your Love Tonight call and response), and his fabulous theatrics (Killer Queen).

The crowd was extremely enthusiastic and LOUD. They didn’t really know the hand claps for Radio Gaga, though! The North American audiences need some lessons in this regard, especially compared to the London audiences! Everyone in the upper sections pretty much stayed seated until the encore, although everyone on the floor stood for the whole show. I can’t wait to get down on the floor for future shows so I can stand up and dance without worrying about the people behind me!

After the show, cher shared her funny stories with us, we all had a good laugh, flailed about in the awesome afterglow, and said our goodbyes. I drove cocoglam, Reese, and ladybugs back to their parents’ house and hotel respectively, giving us lots more opportunity debrief and flail. After dropping off cocoglam, on the way to their hotel in Hollywood, I drove Reese and ladybugs by Bootsy Bellows and Adam’s old apartment building, and we happened to spot Chateau Marmont on Sunset Blvd too, which was cool.

In summary, a fabulous time with new and old ALL friends, and a fabulous, awesome, amazing, spectacular show that was a tremendous hit with the audience. I feel so privileged and delighted to be taking part in this piece of Queen and Adam history-making. Heart

I’m pleased to announce that Mikael Wood, a keen observer of pop music, will be joining our Arts and Entertainment team as a staff writer. Mikael has great range, as demonstrated by recent pieces on Jennifer Lopez, Neil Diamond and Rick Ross. He’s as comfortable dissecting and assessing the world of hip-hop and R&B as he is country, gospel and bubblegum pop – with an ability to put whatever the subject matter in a wider context for our readers. Mikael will be a key contributor to our Pop & Hiss music blog, providing smart takes on news and trends. He joins a strong team, one that excels at spotting the most interesting new artists, breaking pop music news and in covering Coachella, Rock the Bells and other festivals. A graduate of Northwestern University, Mikael’s work has appeared in Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, SPIN, the Village Voice and other publications. He’s also been a frequent contributor to the Los Angeles Times. Mikael grew up in Little Rock, Ark., the son of a classic-rock radio program director. He began his concert going at an early age – with a 1988 (or was it ’89?) show by Bon Jovi the first he can remember. Mikael starts next week and will report to Pop Music Editor Lorraine Ali. Please join me in welcoming him to The Times.
