    RE: The LA Times review.
The LA Times is know for giving negative reviews
It seemed to me like this guy was trying to be a creative writer rather than just writing a review.
The only thing I kind of agree with is the long solos by Bri, Etc. The audience use this time for bathroom/snack bar breaks.
When Adam was on stage no one was going anywhere.

I have never seen Adam happier and the crowds response to him was a joy to experience.

  2. luval says:

I had mentioned before the show that I hoped there would be A-listers there. Why is it I feel bad that we didn’t hear of any? Suppose they could have been. I remember Anthony Hopkins loving Adam, others I suppose.

  3. milwlovesadam says:

I was not looking forward to the Brian interlude when i was in Chicago. I didn’t like it in any of the streams we saw or from London.

    However.

Live, it was completely different. I loved every second of it. Perhaps knowing I was seeing a legend perform was part of it, perhaps seeing the reaction of die-hard Queen fans to Brian’s solo was part of it. I just know that I would not have even tried to leave my seat to use a restroom.

That’s me. Others can feel differently.

I just don’t get his review. It’s like he was trying to re-invent something. It’s not great journalism, it’s a review of a concert. And it’s it’s not well-written.

He’s entitled to his opinion, however, it gets to be a bore when your local critic rarely ever likes something. We had a similar situation here, with our main arts critic. He never liked anything. Ever. What would it have hurt if a positive review were to be published? Wasn’t there anything he actually liked or remotely enjoyed? Ever?

He’s gone now. Our main music critic and and I have exchanged several wonderful emails. He writes in a way that shows his disdain or his enthusiasm of music. I also have noted that he has musical preferences, so he uses other writers to go to shows that may not be to his liking. It is Summerfest now, so he tends to write and see the main rock acts, main country acts, and alt rock/indie stuff. He uses other writers to cover less-known acts and side stage bands.

Mayhaps LA Times could use other reviewers too. IMHO.

Hi everyone! Just wanted to drop by to say that I was one of the packed house last night who thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the show! I really enjoyed the entire thing – even the older music that I wasn’t very familiar with. Brian’s guitar performances convinced me that I must find some way to get my hubby to the show when it hits Dallas – I just know he’ll love it! I really don’t get that LA Times review? Guess you just can’t please everyone (but I sure didn’t see, hear or read any other comments from dissatisfied fans). I read one tweet that summed it up perfectly – the entire show felt very “personal”. I wouldn’t have changed a thing and am trying to talk aely into going to a third show in Houston! In Love I’m just so happy and proud for Adam that he’s been given this opportunity – he makes me feel pretty special because I knew 5 years ago that he was destined for something wonderful. I just love it when I’m right! Grin

What a treat to finally meet the famous cher, cwm and turqoisewaters in person! You’re all just as sweet, fun and passionate about Adam as I imagined. Cher, I’m still wearing the bracelet you handed out. Sorry this is short, but I’m typing on a tablet and wanted to post before the next big thing in Vegas!

  8. Axxxel says:

@TexasWannaHoldEm: Thank you for your comments > Nice to hear from people who were actually on the spot…

The LA times guy conveniently did not mention the 2 songs that sounded differently from the original.. maybe he is not really into operatics like on “Love kills” and ” Who wants to live forever”…Or maybe he wasn’t even there… I also think he wasn’t even there at “somebody to love”…Judging from the video’s, it does sound at some times different than the original, it even sounds different than during the previous Queen + Adam Lambert concerts..MAybe, it is also not a good thing to just judge from video’s.. (see the comment of milwlovesadam at
07/04/2014 at 7:35 pm). Oh well, maybe he is one of those who don’t just want a nostalgia tour and wants Queen + Adam Lambert to record new material and test the market…While Queen and Adam Lambert just want to have fun with the fans and get paid for it.. so mutual beneficial…

  9. luval says:

Hi TexasWannaHoldEm. So nice to hear from you. Seems like Iheart was yesterday. So thrilled that we were able to see the birth of Queen & Adam (sort of) in Las Vegas. At the time I thought it was a one time thing. Boy was I wrong!

Hope you can convince your husband to go to Dallas. Tell him it’s a once in a lifetime tour!

  10. retjenny says:

I just saw Lyndsey Parker on a local L.A. TV station. She was at the concert last night and she was raving about it. Of course we know she loves Adam. The guy talking to her said something about Adam being an American Idol and she said, “Not any more, he is now a Queen Idol”.

  11. rainbowgal4 says:

    TexasWannaHoldEm

I liked your take on the show. Jennie and I will be in Dallas and I hope we can meet up. We are staying at the W which nkd said is really close to the venue. She suggested getting together for a drink before the show. I do hope you and your husband will make it.

  12. rainbowgal4 says:

And for those celebrating Happy 4th of July. Stay safe and enjoy.

  13. luval says:

AL or eywflyer…I love the filled stadium pics you post at the top of the thread. If you could keep doing that for every show that would be great! I show them at work and peeps are awed.

  14. riskylady says:

I’m at the point where I don’t give a f**k about these pseudo-intellectual critics trying to impress with their jaded take on everything, but it seems that this one does appreciate Adam as an artist, hence:

“Given the potential for creating something new with Lambert, an artist who’s demonstrated a distinct point of view in his own work, the show was also a disappointment, at least for those seeking more than rote nostalgia.”

“You caught a glimpse of Lambert’s personality — the sexy-goofy charisma that made him such a sensation on “Idol” — in his limited stage banter, as when he dedicated “Fat Bottomed Girls” to a portion of the audience he described with a delightfully unprintable epithet. He was good too in “Killer Queen,” which he sang while reclining on a purple velvet settee, his eyelashes fluttering with lovable mischief.”

Shame he overlooked Adam’s brilliant take on songs like STL, WWTLF, Love Kills – in fact, others too. To me he gives Killer Queen a new dimension, as well as Now I’m Here. I don’t remember Freddie being able to sustain notes, especially high notes, like Adam does, because his vibrato was – dare I say it but others have before me so WTF – inferior and not a natural feature of his voice.
In journalism there is a saying: “The truth will out.” Eventually it will catch up with these dingbats. Someday, someone will have the balls to say this man is a great singer, as was Freddie. PERIOD.
I much prefer Adam’s beautiful voice and tone for pure LISTENING, even over and over, to Queen. And then there is the eye-candy factor.
Freddie is fun to watch and his vocals are unique, but not something I want to have on repeat.

  15. riskylady says:

Loving the recaps here of those at the show! Those are the reviews that matter!

  16. TexasWannaHoldEm says:

luval, iheart was so much fun. Being there for the “birth” is so true! Hope to see you again soon!

  17. nkd says:

Bell bottoms ( me no likey with the fringes and high heels. Too loose )

mils and glambotgram, we are of one mind!

luval, if I’m not mistaken, I believe that it was after WWTLF that people said he wiped a tear, not WATC.

Texas, so glad to hear from you! Wink

  18. luval says:

Thanks, Nkd. Will have to look at WWTLF again.

  19. Calgary says:

My take on the LA critic – as riskylady says, he did have some positive things to say. But his negative comments all related to a hidden agenda and that is not something one expects of a good critic. He should have admitted what it was he was looking for, then his criticism might have made some sense and given peeps a basis for judgement.

  20. nkd says:

I haven’t watched it yet luval, so not for sure.

ETA In the TALC vid you can see him wipe at his cheek as he walks away. A tear? Don’t know.

  21. nkd says:

I’ve been loving Brian’s guitar interlude since Chicago. I was mesmerized by it there live and have been ever since on the streams. There are times that it gets so intense that it brings a tear.

  22. angelowal says:

mils….I have to agree with everything that you wrote – you must be channeling me, LOL!

So many new costume changes. Bell bottoms ( me no likey with the fringes and high heels. Too loose ) , earrings, rings with gloves, red gloves, re-done eyebrows, new hair cut, gold belt with fringes.

The only bell bottoms I like are the laces. BB can bring back the laces and bare feet any time honey. Any. Time.

I loved how Brian sat on the couch.

I’m over the use of the word “bitch.” I get it’s used more in LA. I get it is used more by folks younger than I. I just don’t like it. A lot of Queen fans are older and may agree. IMHO.

  36. cwm says:

For what it’s worth, this is my take on the LA Times review. As retjenny said, the LA Times critics are typically negative. They have long been known for being very snobbish, jaded, and self-important, and rather out of touch with what audiences actually like or want. Apparently it would not be in keeping with their self-appointed role of ~arbiters of taste~ to deign to express enthusiasm about something unless it meets their snooty standard for artistic merit.

Interestingly enough, in this case, the critic did seem to like Adam, but it was Queen he was not a fan of. He wanted them to have used Adam’s talents to switch things up more, which is interesting and very complimentary of Adam. I guess he didn’t realize that they did change the arrangement and/or presentation of Something To Love, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Killer Queen, Love Kills, etc. I’m not sure what exactly he was expecting for a nostalgia act. Like Calgary said, there’s some hidden agenda there he’s not copping to. And he obviously doesn’t know that the operatic interlude in Bohemian Rhapsody has always been presented with the recorded version rather than with live vocals, even when Freddie was alive, so he mistakenly assumes that Brian and Roger decided to use the recording because they don’t think Adam can handle it. Which is silly of course.

Anyway, he really did not seem to understand the purpose of the show and there was a lot he just didn’t seem to “get” about it – like why they were projecting images of Freddie and why they they designed the set list the way they did. The audience definitely got it, though, and was very appreciative!

  37. Axxxel says:

wow, that Dianakat1 picture that Adam retweeted ! Just wow !

  38. cwm says:

cher – I’m so sorry about your lost recap! And you had such stories to tell! It’s very late now so I will have to write my own recap tomorrow, but I do want to at least tell part of cher’s story and let everybody here know that she had quite the adventure at the show. She sat right next to Tommy Joe, Terrance, and Jonny!

I was amazed and amused when, toward the beginning of the show, I get a text on my phone from cher telling me that she was sitting right next to Tommy Joe, Terrance, and Jonny, and that Sauli, Neil, and Sutan were two rows up from her. Apparently she had some nice exchanges with TJR that she’ll have to tell you about. Smile

Then, during the Brian/Roger interlude, cher says that everyone got up to go backstage to see Adam. When they came back out, Jonny slid in next to cher instead of TJR.

Then a little while later, mid-show, cher totally cracks me up when she sends out a text that simply says “Don’t know how to take a selfie.” LOL what I am supposed to do with that information in the middle of the concert? So funny.

Turns out that Jonny took mercy on poor cher and took over her phone and started taking pictures for her on her phone, including pics of the stage and a selfie of himself, Terrance, and TJR – that is the photo that she sent to AL to post. He also took one of her with the other guys. Yay!

Then I get a text from her that says “Jonny is wiggling his ass to the drums.” She said later after the show that he was banging his hips into hers and getting all friendly. LOL!

Oh she also told us that she saw Sauli and asked him if she could take a picture of him, and he agreed and stood there very patiently while she tried and tried again to get her phone camera to take a decent picture in the dark. But alas, after many attempts, all she got is a very dark picture where all you can see is one of his hands.

I’m laughing so hard as I write this. cher – you are a treasure! You of all people totally deserve to have had this up-close and personal encounter with Adam’s friends! I’m so happy for you! And the fact that it was so comical just adds so much to the charm of the story!

  39. eywflyer says:

Finally got the post updated with a full set of videos, playlist, photos gleaned from the comments, and a few reviews. Sorry for the delay.

The LA Times review was one of those pretty clearly written with a pre-determined agenda. One serious factual misrepresentation that I saw – the guy had a problem with the operatic part of Bohemian Rhapsody being done on video instead of live. That portion of the song has never been fully performed live, with Freddie or without him, due to the complex multi-tracking in the recorded version. The reviewer makes a big deal of this like it is something new and a slap at Adam.

    Quoting from wikipedia:

Initially following the song’s release, the operatic middle section proved a problem for the band. Because of extensive multi-tracking, it could not be performed on stage.

Starting with the A Day at the Races Tour in 1977, the band adopted their lasting way of playing the song live. The opening ballad would be played on stage, and after Brian May’s guitar solo, the lights would go down, the band would leave the stage, and the operatic section would be played from tape, while coloured stage lights provided a light show based around the voices of the opera section.

Nice reviews from K-Earth 101 and the Pasadena Star-News are also linked above.

  40. glambotgram says:

Asif thank you for the beautiful pictures especially #5 lol
I love the one Adam tweeted too. He always know exactly which one will make us melt.

The recaps are great everyone. Keep them coming.
Cher you lucky girl. So much fun

cwm I like your take on the LA critic and thanks for the details of Cher’s concert experience.

Texas glad you enjoyed the concert and hope you can get your hubby to go to Dallas.

  41. TLKC says:

Yep, eywflyer. The LA TIMES reviewer is out to lunch on the how BR is traditionally performed live.

Also, he implied that Freddie took over the operatic part completely, instead of the two singers trading parts of it. To be honest, some of that escaped me in Chicago – it wasn’t until I got home and saw tour videos that it became clear. It is to Adam’s credit that he stands up so well singing live in tandem with an excellent recording of Freddie.

  42. TLKC says:

Thanks for your perspective on the LA Times review, cwm. Ha ha on Cher! Can’t wait to see her pics.

  43. luval says:

Good morning! Thanks, eyeflyer for updating the videos & other links. I haven’t starting playing the videos but just scanning them up top I don’t remember any of the background photos!! LOL. I don’t even know something is happening on that Q screen unless it’s one of them.

I am back was so exhausted yesterday after 2 shows back to back and traveling in between I have been a slug all day yesterday.
First show all close ups got my fill of Adam full view sound not too good. Second show much further a way great sound and beautiful view of the lights and settings. Only complaint not enough Adam screen time. Adams voice was out of this world on all songs what a difference from what I heard from my first show. I heard notes I never heard him do before, stunning.. There was this guy on my left that was spasm out the whole show. When
Brian asked how do you like our new boy he jumped out of his seat into the aisle went into a cheerleader mode. At first I thought for sure he was a Queen fan if so Adam won him over. My daughter said best concert she has ever been to. She could not get over how those “old guys still rocked”

cher and all that got our list of names together, thank you so much for a great get together, met so many peeps for the first time. The Sizzler was so convenient to park walk a short distance and getting out to go home was painless. Excellent choice. Just love our Allers . I now have a new friend who lives a mile away from me, hows that?

You lucky guys who are going to Vegas have a great time. Be interesting to hear how they set up a smaller venue.

  47. milwlovesadam says:

Loving all the reacps and cher’s stories, and TALC. OMG. The TALC vids are out of this world.

The shows just keep getting better and better. In so many small details.

I also love how Adam is drawing Brian out of his shell, he’s smiling and interacting a lot more.

I also love how he makes sure to interact with every musician, and therefore gives them recognition as a cohesive band.

I do wonder how he’ll rein it in for a smaller venue. It’s the size of theater we saw him play so often on GN. The staging and set up will need to be scaled back, and Adam, well, Adam, we know he kills a smaller stage and venue.

Don’t we? In Love Devil Devil Devil
