One day I got e-mails from two of my friends in Edmonton (that don’t know each other), both saying ‘Queen and Adam Lambert are coming to Edmonton. Do you want me to get tickets?’
I said they were also coming to Vancouver, so for a change I didn’t have to travel to see a show.
A few days later the daughter of one of them could get tickets for $60 through Groupon, and it turned out I couldn’t refuse that opportunity (being Dutch and thrifty – or just plain cheap). Immediately I started thinking how nice it would be to see them again and to go to a show with real life friends
We invited the other friend to come as well and have all been counting the days.
Since I don’t have a car anymore, I asked my ex (I live with him and my son temporarily) whether I could take his car for the occasion. He rather liked the idea of going to Edmonton and meet with his ex-colleagues, so it was decided we would go together. It’s ‘only’ 1300 km.
We arrived at the venue around 7 pm, just before doors open, and the line-ups were very long. Near me I saw several Queen shirts, at least one lady with some over the top Adam sign (forgot what it said, just remember my reaction to it), and a good mix of old and young. Once the doors opened everything seemed to go smoothly though and it didn’t take long to get inside. Around 8 o’clock people were really getting restless. We entertained ourselves with the wave. The first attempts fell flat, but each new attempt reached a little further and it didn’t take long before the wave went around the stadium, and around, and around…
Then the clapping started, which morphed into the claps of We Will Rock You.
Soon after, the stage lights came on and the roars were deafening.
And then I heard Adam’s voice, and his opening lines were breathtaking…
There’s a few things that stood out for me. I loved Killer Queen, I love the song, but his antics on the couch are so fitting. The champagne squirts were a nice surprise and his attitude was a perfect match!
Somebody To Love was gorgeous as always.
Love Of My Life is so tender and beautiful, I always get emotional. Great job by Brian. Roger’s solo is also fantastic. And I love the images from them as youngsters.
Next one is Love Kills. Brian started with ‘What do you think of the new boy?’, and Edmonton clearly approved, very loud response! This is the only song I video’ed in full, and by now it could be posted up top already. The first few seconds are rubbish, but it gets better pretty quickly. Also, I didn’t want to experience the song through a camera display, so I wasn’t watching my camera and sometimes it drifted. Needless to say it didn’t disappoint. I love that song!
Toward the end Adam asked the audience to give him some love, first on my side and then on the other. We did our best, but when we heard the noise from the other side my friend said ‘next time I want to sit over there’. Very funny. Adam agreed that we were clearly the losers.
All in all a great show and I’m glad I’ll be seeing it again in Vancouver. Tonight!
