Adam receiving the GLAAD Davidson/Valentini Award

June-IdolJune-ChinaJune-80sJune-Life1
June-Life2June-Life3June-ChateauJune-HopeLA

What a very rewarding month of May we had as fans of Adam: an honor from GLAAD, a return to Idol, a broadcast of Chinese Idol and the 80’s Show in Japan, the Life Ball and finally, the Hope of LA award. June seems to be a relatively quiet month with only 2 concerts; one in Pittsburgh and one in Orlando. There were lots of great photos of Adam to choose from so I hope you enjoy the GLAAD photo chosen for the main one as well as the few that make up the mosaic above.
Enjoy the photos and the chat!

I fully understand why Adam won’t talk about new music. He has been copied so many times.
    1) His green laser Idol cone copied by Xtina just 1 week later on Oprah.
    2) FYE video copied by Miley and Britney, and Brit’s inferior one won an award. (“Til the World Ends” – Britney; Miley “Can’t Be Tamed”)
    3) Trespassing cover copied by Bieber.
    4) Bruno Mars in studio with Adam. Adam finishing up By the Rules in LA with Ginny Blackmore, later covers Is This Love in Australia. Bruno puts reggae type song on album in Dec 2012. Hailed as “original.”
    5) Carrie U has “dark side, light side” on album Blown Away, released just after Trespassing and BTiKM video. (LOL Carrie has a dark side????)
    6) Kelly C just put out video pretty much copying NCOE – even posters over there recognized it. (People Like Us)
    7) Glee and JLo copied Dragon jacket.
NO ONE acknowledges Adam even when blatantly copying him. But, there are no coincidences IMHO. Also, hair and style frequently copied.
Maybe you guys can remember even more examples…..

Here are my long rambling thoughts….
I am going to completely disagree that no one listens to rock music. Rock is so varied and there are plenty of mainstream very popular rock bands. Muse, Fall Out Boy, Radiohead, Coldplay, Green Day, 30 Seconds to Mars, Bon Jovi, and next week Black Sabbath is putting out a new album that is expected to sell 500,000 copies its first week. Green Day just gave a concert in the UK for 60,000 people. Fall Out Boy’s CD just debuted in the top 10 in 60 countries. Coldplay’s last album has sold 8 million copies. Adam’s challenge is he is not a band but if he gets the right songs he could break through or start a band. Who knows, maybe that is where they are going. I think FYE did better because Adam sold himself as a rocker on AI and then with Queen. Most of the music on FYE leaned more rock. I can’t tell you how many Queen fans I talk to that ask why he is wasting his talent on pop crap and they just can’t take him seriously. He has to pick a style and stay there. Once he gets established then he can experiment and do projects that mean a lot to him. My sister is in her early 30’s and has lots of friends in their 20’s and they all listen to rock music as well as pop, rap and other things.
I hope Adam doesn’t do any Broadway now. If he does I am afraid that will be seen by lots of people as a failure, i.e.,” see he couldn’t make it as a legitimate singer.” Get another #1 album and then go from there. I think he is doing the right things now, being at A list events, keeping his name out there, being seen and doing his charity work etc. is all good. I also hope he really does push his music for a movie. They just hired a director for 50 Shades of Grey and I know Adam and the writer have traded tweets. Going away for close to 2 years between albums I think hurt him. If he hadn’t done the EMA’s I would have had no idea what he was up to. That got my attention again so I wonder if that hadn’t happened if I would have known about his CD.
About his new music, I have no doubt they are doing some sort of album/project. If not, he would not still be signed and on RCA’s artist roster. Again, just my thoughts……… Love a good debate so thoughts?

ETA: I LOVE rock and Broadway.

  5. Kradamour says:

Hmmm…the music in Pippin stops my heart and has for almost 40 years. And it is the same stop that Mad World creates.

Most rock music, on the other hand, is what I would describe as “tuneless”, the word you gave to Pippin, ulti.

    Interesting.

  6. ultimathule says:

Love your post, aely – lots of meaty stuff there. Will read it again and absorb your comments.

  7. ultimathule says:

Your post, riskylady, is just so damn true.

  8. ultimathule says:

Hey, Krad – Mad World will be our meeting point.

And rock is a mixed bag – so many different types – you like Muse, don’t you?

  9. Kradamour says:

There is a lot in your post to like, aely. I will stick to my opinion that rock skews older (definitely still very popular, though) but I totally agree that Adam confuses people by being all over the place. On the other hand, if he stuck to the rock-ier things I would have bailed a long time ago. So until he is firmly established (sheesh, are we still saying that after four years???!!!) I guess he has to try different things to see where his success lies.

I think that rock fan demographics vary by geographical region, too, as well as by urban/suburban/rural criteria.

Also agree that Adam needs to stay away from doing Broadway just yet, for the reasons you gave.
    And movie music? YES!
    Yes Yes Yes

Sorry that I couldn’t disagree with you more, aely, there’s not much debate here!
    Wink
    Loved your post!

  10. Kradamour says:

ulti, not a Muse fan. Liked Adam’s take on Starlight but don’t like their version. Annoying.

  11. ultimathule says:

Looks like we’re all on the same page with regard to Broadway.

  12. ultimathule says:

Hey, we agree again, Krad – assumed you liked Muse. I don’t even like Starlight.

  13. Kradamour says:

hehe ulti. One day on my way north I’ll stop at your house and we can play music games.
    Wink
    Could be fun, actually!

  14. aely says:

krad I do agree Rock skews older, college and older and also agree about region. You are not going to see a lot of tweens at a Radiohead concert but there were tons of college and 20’s. I guess a bigger point is it still sells well and tours even better.

One last thought about Adam and his image. I think they are trying to get him to be more about himself and his talent not about the character he portrays. Face it people like simple and elegant. Being more approachable (and hot as hell) can only help people take notice and may even get him roles in TV or Movies. Most entertainers have multiple business enterprises and he should be no different….Diversify!

At his concerts though, all bets are off and I want him to be as freakin crazy as he wants to be! Let that freak flag fly!

  15. ultimathule says:

Ron – if you feel like it, sing one of these R&H songs on your next vid:

    • (1925) “Manhattan”, “Mountain Greenery” (from The Garrick Gaieties)
    • (1927) “Thou Swell” (from A Connecticut Yankee)
    • (1928) “You Took Advantage of Me” (from Present Arms)
    • (1929) “Spring is Here”, “Yours Sincerely” and “With a Song in My Heart” (from Spring Is Here)
    • (1932) “Lover”, “Mimi”, “Isn’t It Romantic?”, (from Love Me Tonight)
    • (1933) “You Are Too Beautiful”, from Hallelujah, I’m a Bum
    • (1934) “Blue Moon” (from Manhattan Melodrama)
    • (1935) “Little Girl Blue”, “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World” (from Jumbo)
    • (1936) “There’s a Small Hotel” (from On Your Toes)
    • (1937) “Where or When”, I Wish I Were in Love Again”, “My Funny Valentine”, “Johnny One Note”, “The Lady is a Tramp” (from Babes in Arms)

  16. milwlovesadam says:

I love Broadway, including Pippin. The only musical that I haven’t liked was Rent. Rambling plot and not melodic to my ears. My all-out faves are anything Fosse and Fiddler.

I love love love rock music. But not all rock music. I like my rock more bluesy. For instance, I love me some Stones and Zep, but don’t like The Who. UGH to Iron Maiden, but thumbs up to Bon Jovi. Cannot stand Rush or AC/DC. I love classic rock.

I have professed my love of Adam’s WLL, Purple Haze, and Sandman many many times. I do re-visit them from time to time. Sleepwalker, Shady, AYGGMY, and Chokehold fill a rock need in me from Adam. And listening to TJR wail on his guitar ( Monte on GN ) gives my rock heart a thrill.

Twentieth Century Boy was very good ( floor mopping anyone??) , but I just do not care for Shout. Granted, Adam nails it, but i just have never liked that song.

The country fair set list should be more rock. Fairs do well with rock. Hard-driving music is the usual fare for fairs. IMHO.

I just feel that Adam had Broadway in his future at some time. I do not feel this is a failure at all. Many stars have done a Broadway stint. No problem.

  17. ultimathule says:

I hope you do, Krad – would love that.

  18. ultimathule says:

Agree about Broadway in the future, mils, but feel that, until he’s on firmer footing in the industry, he should avoid that labeling.

  19. Kradamour says:

I think they are trying to get him to be more about himself and his talent not about the character he portrays.

Or, Adam has come to this himself. (As much or more likely, IMHO)

Re Adam having Broadway in his future – ITA. But I think he needsd another album first, and a very successful one.
Or, I could see him (and I would see him, I’d be on the next train to NYC!) doing a guest stint in an established play on Broadway. (Hello, Pippin!)
But I think that it is too early for him to diversify.
    Just MHO, of course.

  20. Kradamour says:

ha, ulti! great minds posting at the same time!

  21. milwlovesadam says:

I love Muse, Green Day, Radiohead, Pink, Bruno, and a lot of others.

I just so sick of Adam not getting the respect he deserves. He can do so much so well . The area he gets tons of cred and love IS the Broadway world.

I hope he gets to have a part in 50 Shades in some way, on screen, as a part of the sound track, anything.

I hope he puts out a single followed by another single then an EP. Faster and out to the audience.

I listened to TSP this week while driving. After a break of a couple of months. Gotta say: Shady, Chokehold, Pop That Lock and Runnin remain my favorites. By far. What do they have in common? A more rock/blues/funk vibe.

  22. aely says:

Yes, I meant they as a collective, Adam included. He is a very smart man so did not mean to imply differently. And I mean diversify as in movies, TV, nail polish, endorsements, etc… if something comes up jump on it or work it until something does. Like the video game in China.

  23. milwlovesadam says:

aely, I’m loving your posts tonight.

This NY trip has put Adam on a lot of people’s radar, that’s for sure.

And if Queen pans out, it could be massive for him. Time will tell. I just don’t like the booking at this fair.

  24. Kradamour says:

Yes, the random fair performance does strike me as a backward-looking event. Especially when not juxtaposed against much else.
He may well be thinking that he needs to stay visible, but visible at a middling fair? Hmmm…
    Thinking

  25. ultimathule says:

He loves performing – perhaps just something to connect with an audience and keep in practice during this dry season?

  26. ultimathule says:

Was just watching a YT vid and an ad popped up – Samsung/Jay-Z collab that was in the article about the business that I posted upstream in the thread. That’s how it’s done.

  27. Kradamour says:

I just wish that he would do something to get us excited about new music. Not like Trespassing, where he talked, promised, delayed, tweeted, and instagrammed ad-almost-nauseum.
But a small leak to get us salivating and speculating would not be a bad thing.
    Wink

  28. riskylady says:

Well, Phoenix was a fair, and it was great. *kicks self once again for not going* Adam and the band need to keep in practice, and make some $, so why not. Here’s some info – seems last year 67,000 attended concerts.
    http://www.ksby.com/news/attendance-down-at-mid-state-fair-but-livestock-sales-up/#_

aely, agree with you about rock and Broadway. Rock is so diverse, there are many flavors, and even though Adam did Rock for only about half of his songs on Idol, seems that is what a lot of people remember the most. I believe it was Ryan Tedder who was asked in an interview about Adam and said, “He’s a rocker.” He sure puts a rock spin on his live performances, to me at least.
But, he loves funk too. Didn’t he say a black woman lives inside of him?
That’s why I think he will put out an album that has some funk, some rock and maybe a little r&b – just about exactly what he did on Idol. And wouldn’t that be close to FYE?
About Broadway: Labor intensive, very voice-straining, and doesn’t pay very well unless you stay in a show a long time. Maybe one or two highly paid one-offs, but I don’t think he wants that at all. I think he wants to still be himself. I hope he doesn’t cave for money. Read an article last year about a few singers who were in Jesus Christ Superstar which has extremely demanding, high register music, and suffered vocal damage. Noooooooo, please!

Do you feel that maybe Adam does these Fairs to give his band a little play time and some money in their pockets until the new music comes out????? So looking forward to San Diego but would LOVE to hear something new—–anything!!!!!well almost– Thinking

  31. turquoisewaters says:

Oh I love this discussion. Rock is such a wide genre. I am not even sure I would classify “Shout” as rock, it is more pop to me. I think I liked it because I recognized it. It was big in 1985, but people who did not followed pop music during that time would probably not even recognize it. That’s maybe what happened in Pittsburgh. My kind of “rock” includes everything from Muse to Prince. It just needs to have some major energy and attitude, and it needs to be well done (whatever that is LOL).

  39. LadyNorth says:

Very interesting conversation here. I would love Adam to do some rockish material. I love your writings aely. There is many kind of rock. And Whatever he has done, has a strong rock spirit live. But I honestly don’t know what would be commercially the best choice. My guess is that in Europe and Asia rock would be a good choice. But I am not sure if in US it has more to do with other things than music genre, his successfulness I mean. Could it be people’s wrong image about him these days?

But whatever music it will be, it should show his voice enough. Nothing too flat. And I don’t see him as a teen star.

In some interview lately he said he won’t pick one genre, he mixes them. It works for him but can be a problem in the world of trends. Many peeps interpret his will to experiment as a sign that he doesn’t know what kind of an artist he wants to be. That’s sad.

I’m on my way to Helsinki to spend a Mid Summer Fest with my friends. First time there after March and Adam’s concert. Sweet memories… And first time I visit this site with smart phone. Have a nice weekend everyone!

Krad-Thanks so much for posting the utubes of Pippin. I had the best nite listening to the music. I too have always loved the music from the show, since I was in college. You are welcome, coco!
    Heart
Yes, My Corner of the Sky would be all kinds of amazing in Adam’s hands! I have never heard anyone perform it and handle all the notes, for Adam it would be effortless.
I think the lyrics would speak to him, too, and the performance would be (insert adjective here; I don’t think the adjective has yet been created for how moving it would be).

It is also the song that I sing from the play whenever I think of it…only when I am alone, of course…!
    Music Note

  43. milwlovesadam says:

I think he was there because Mike Ruiz was the director.

I simply love Adam’s voice. Yes, he can sing it all, but, there are two types of songs that just speak to me when he sings them: 1) Stirring ballads. OOL and Stay, for example.

    2) Rock, rock rock. Rock mixed with a ballad = Soaked or Chokehold or Runnin or even Take Back. Sleepwalker is the ever luvin’ lulu though for me, still.

This is why I am still listening to Queenbert. It just continues to thrill my rock soul and combine with the best voice on the planet.

I just have a feeling he’s going to go into a Robin Thicke vibe. I hope not. I personally don’t care for that at all.

  44. Miss Chaos says:

I dont disgree that Adam is or should be a Teen Star, who would want to be, they dont stay teens for long,, but I question, who are the fans of Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt, Bruno Mars, and who were the fans for many years of Elvis? I guess my point is that even tho people say or think that Adam only has older fans, these stars certainly had older fans, and I just bet a lot of younger fans too. But here is my opinion, Adam is big over seas, because fans are mixed, young old, male and female. In the US, the only younger and female fans mostly are Adam fans, and some young boys. The macho men will never be Adam fans, they are beer drinking country fans, of fans of straight singers, rappers, ect. Our country is very country Smug and they are proud of it, really these macho men will never like Adam, even if for his voice, and all you have to do is look back to the stupid AI 8 vote and think about it. If your a macho male, you would never go see a macho gay singer, they hate that so much. I can tell in any conversation where Adam is mentioned. My teen grandchildren love him tho, go figure.
