After a very busy couple of weeks of promo and radio concerts following the release of “Trespassing” on May 15, Adam will head to London early this month to begin preparations for his upcoming concerts with Queen. He will do some album promo and a couple of live performances in the UK as well, where Trespassing is set for a July 2 release date. One of these shows is the “Rays of Sunshine” charity event at the very prestigious Royal Albert Hall in London. Adam will also return briefly to the US for a free radio concert in San Francisco on June 24.

Our featured photo (Brian Ach – Getty Images) for this month shows Adam in a very happy mood while performing at the KTUPhoria radio concert. Enjoy the chat!

Finally I hear NCOE on radio: Alice 97.3 San Francisco.

Fault arrived here in MI today, it was waiting on the table for me when I got home from work which means DH took delivery. He hasn’t asked about it yet. He probably doesn’t want to know. Grin

It is beautiful BTW. Adam looks soooo young in all the pics.

Ron, thanks for posting the HDD update, I had to get up and go into the office for a meeting and am just now getting onto the computer. The HDD numbers we have so far are with 54% of outlets reporting, and the rather low numbers across the board indicate that over half of the total sales have probably not come in yet. If John Mayer and Regina Spektor perform as expected by the one day sales estimate, and Trespassing performs more or less in line with those albums, I would expect the final number to be somewhere around 14K, or down about 37% from last week. Back in December 2009, FYE dropped from 51K in its second week to 46K in its third week, or a 9% decrease. Of course that was peak holiday shopping season vs. early June, but still the sales numbers aren’t looking very good for Trespassing at the moment.

Speaking of bad numbers, Kris Allen took a serious plunge in his second week, with the partial HDD report showing him at #47 right now with 2K sales. At best it might do around 5K, which would be a 69% drop from its opening week sales of 16K.

As for HAC adds, with 51 of 92 stations reporting, NCOE has picked up 4 adds thus far, and is tied with Linkin Park and Train for the 3rd most added song of the week behind Kelly Clarkson and Katy Perry. The really discouraging news comes from Top 40, where with 49 of 155 stations reporting the song has yet to pick up a single add.

Yesterday I liked By the Rules. Today I love By The Rules.

  7. eywflyer says:

57 of 92 HAC stations now reporting, NCOE has 5 adds and is currently the 3rd most added song of the week, still behind Kelly and Katy. Today’s adds have mostly been smaller independant stations. KMXB (CBS Radio) Las Vegas and KMYI (Clear Channel) San Diego are the two larger market adds for the week thus far.

  8. ultimathule says:

That’s so funny, luval – it’s darn addictive. Wonder what other “genre” he’s going to pop up with next – any guesses?

  9. luval says:

    Ultimathule … Polka? Smile

Guess what… Now I love Broken English and Kickin In is growing on me.

  10. eywflyer says:

The HAC panel is 100% in for the week – 5 adds with no big market stations. Disappointing but about as expected. HAC is a slow moving format for almost anyone not named Katy or Kelly.

NCOE continues to track quite closely with BTIKM on both rate of adds and HAC chart performance. That’s not a good thing.

Really Angry I know. Really Angry

During one of Adele’s many victory speeches at last year’s Grammy’s, no wonder she pointedly thanked radio for playing her songs.

In my naive world, when you work hard on a project with the end result achieving almost unanimous praise that then goes on to make history by topping the BB chart at Number 1, it.should.count.for.something. It should mean something! You get a treat. You get a reward … like having your music played on the Curse ing radio! Really Angry Even a dog gets tossed a bone for being ‘good’.

Nominations are only 4 months away, so I tried to cheer myself up by thinking about the Grammy’s. Five seconds later I felt worse when I started to think that mega-hit and blockbuster are most likely not going to be words attached to “Trespassing”. Why would the Grammy’s give serious consideration to anything that isn’t a huge commercial success? Who does the nominating? Who votes? What’s the criteria? I didn’t know so I did some digging and found this:

In both voting rounds, Academy members are required to vote based upon quality alone, and not to be influenced by sales, chart performance, personal friendships, regional preferences or company loyalty. The acceptance of gifts is prohibited. Members are urged to vote in a manner that preserves the integrity of the academy.

    Also:

Best New Artist is awarded to a performer who releases, during the Eligibility Year, the first recording that establishes the public identity of that artist (which is not necessarily their first proper release).

At least that’s the way it’s supposed to work and, if it does work that way, I’m somewhat encouraged. “Don’t vote for personal friends”, though. Really? There’s still time for Adam to put himself squarely on the map between now and voting time for Best New Artist. Instead of a little red wagon for “all those awards”, maybe this is one nomination we can reasonably expect? Maybe. Of course, Album of The Year is certainly possible based on “quality”. It’s the record label that first submits their nominations to a committee of approximately 150 “music experts”. I think it’s assured that Sony will offer “Trespassing” for consideration.

Beyond the upcoming concerts, other appearances and personal triumphs, I’d like to be optimistic about industry recognition and approval.

  13. eywflyer says:

Ron, I think that a Best New Artist nomination would be unlikely, as the Academy will probably feel that FYE established Adam’s public identity (at least his initial one – which has now changed somewhat with the Trespassing era).

I do think that an Album of the Year nomination is a realistic possibility. I have felt from the start that Trespassing would be an album that critics would love, but that might not sell all that well. So far that seems to be the case, with the Metacritic score currently sitting at 80 which is very high for a pop album and only one point below “universal acclaim” (thanks for nothing EW).

I have to say that I just got my Fault magazine, and ordered items from JC Penney, to show my support for them. Actually, they had something I needed, but I could order it from any other store. I am so happy that OMM action against JC Penney really backfired!LOL!

I love “By The Rules” and I’m happy that I ordered UK version of TS some time ago. Why are people dissecting lyrics? Who cares? Smile

You’re right. I wasn’t looking at it that way, that just because his image has changed that makes him a new artist. I was though looking at Adam becoming more prominent (Queen, Elton John, the orient concert – more sales!) in the next 4/5 months that would make him eligible (more “established”) for Best New Artist more than it did 3 years ago.

    I’m sure you’re right though.

Did you all read about the Bieber treatment?
    http://www.billboard.com/column/chartbeat#/column/chartbeat/how-radio-got-back-with-justin-bieber-s-1007215152.story
The international popstar mafia is clearly determined to keep Adam out of radio for fear that the general public realizes that it has been duped by singers that can’t sing. (Just my personal conspiracy theory. Laugh )
I am still hopeful for NCOE/ Trespassing sales. I hope international releases will also help. Maybe he should have sold one-way-CDs. I’d be on my 100th copy easily.

  21. luval says:

Thanks for that article, turquoisewaters. Really gives in insight as to what’s going on in radio. 2012 payola, IMO.

  22. sparkle says:

Hi turquoisewaters! It was great meeting you at WB. Thanks so much for posting the National Post pic – it is truly mesmerizing! Don’t skip this one, peeps!!!

  23. Ron says:

    Dear turquoisewaters!

I’m on the verge of exploding. (Of course, not at you!)

“Radio needs to allow star artists the time to connect. Justin Bieber is one of those,” Bartels says. “I went back with my staff and our friends at radio and promoted belief. All the signs were there: video views, huge single sales, monster streaming and requests.”

And these same radio executives across the U.S. largely “went back with their staff and friends” and decided Adam is not worth promoting.

Kradamour, I keep going back to what your son said, ” … it’s because he’s gay”.

That’s it. That’s the bottom line answer to any question about NCOE not getting radio play or any reason why he’s dismissed and disrespected (by most) for everything.

I could go on but I’m going to restrain myself.

    Not.happy.

. Why would the Grammy’s give serious consideration to anything that isn’t a huge commercial success?

Remember that last year or the year before there was a jazz(?)
musician who came from nowhere to win a Grammy.

  28. turquoisewaters says:

Sorry to ruin your day, Ron. I guess we all know that radio is BS, pretty much. I don’t think Adam is the only victim of this, there are probably hundreds of artists out there that just don’t have the right look/back story to be commercial. Adam just has the additional “gay hurdle” to jump. Considering all this, what Adam has accomplished is very remarkable.

  29. ultimathule says:

Was that Florence and the Machine?

  30. luval says:

There was that guy Bon Iver who came out of nowhere (I never heard of him), who was up for Record of the Year and I think he won Best New Artist. Not sure what his style of music is. Guitar picking I think. Smile

There are several sites already for predicting 2013 Grammy nominations. Most are from early May. …Rihanna, Lana Del Ray, Coldplay, Kelly Clarkson, some group called Fun….others. Even Bieber.

  34. Northern Spirit says:

Thanks for posting that link to the National Post turquoisewaters. Yeah NP! Great shot.

And these same radio executives across the U.S. largely “went back with their staff and friends” and decided Adam is not worth promoting.

This is one thing I’m not understanding very well. Why would a record label like RCA put so much money (or do they), time and effort behind a star and not promote them? How is it that other artists seem to get on the radio instantly as soon as their songs are released, but not Adam. Surely other artist’s fans don’t all have to work as hard as we seem to have to to request Adam, get him on the radio, top the charts. Do other fan bases have organized requesting groups, too? I’m just not understanding any of this.

Adam has put his whole life and soul into this album. It’s an outstanding album and deserves to be heard.

  35. luval says:

Hi Northern Spirit. You have the exact questions that I have. Somehow we have to get some answers. Right now we have absolutely none.

eta: I can’t believe sometimes we are even discussing this stuff. First we were worried about Adam having a good album. As it turns out, IMO it’s a masterpiece. It’s the rest of the bull shit that we now have to be concerned with.

  36. Northern Spirit says:

Hi luval. We need to find someone in the radio business to shed some light on this because it’s becoming clear that something else is at play here. Why can’t shear talent make the airwaves? Adam did well with WWFM, so it’s not like people don’t know who he is. I still think BTIKM was a bit mistake to release as a first single. Just whose idea was that anyway…. (fabulous video, though)

  37. luval says:

I think it has to be someone in the radio business who is not in the radio business anymore. There is a guy in my town who left “corporate” radio because they wouldn’t let him play what he wanted. He might have some answers. He’s now with another station here with his own show and plays everything. Although it’s not pop or top 40, he may have some info. I don’t know him but maybe I’ll get the guts to contact him. Have a friend who knows him, though. Maybe I can take that route.

    Dear Northern Spirit

Because other artists have never said they were gay until they’d reached a monetarily and secure, happy future.

  39. Northern Spirit says:

Because other artists have never said they were gay until they’d reached a monetarily and secure, happy future.

It sure is beginning to look that way, Ron.

Does one need radio success to be successful? I know Adam wants that, but he could still be huge without it.

  40. Kradamour says:

It feels so good to be back in the land of unblocked internet!!!!! I missed our peeps!!!!

Catching up: LOVED that photo! Loved the interviews, especially the French one! Tommy lipsynching Adsm was TOO funny!

Okay, re the grammys…two words…Imogen Heap.
I’ve been thinking a lot about this, and I keep coming back to her. Another “musician’s musician”, grammy-winning in spite of no huge radio successes, just because she is so damn talented and respected. The music is totally different, of course, but I think she is a good example that validates the credibility of the grammy system (at least sometimes).

I can definitely see Adam nominated for Album of the Year. To be honest, I will be surprised if it isn’t nominated.

And if it isn’t, I will have to follow Ron and quote my son. “Mom, the dude’s gay.”
And I really, really don’t want to have to do that. Until my Adam stanning, I don’t think I understood the level of bigotry that exists…or maybe I just chose not to see it. I even wrote a paper about the DOMA, and taught a class that included a section on constitutional protections for gays. But in my heart, I don’t think I ever believed that a deserving musical artist – part of what I imagine as a very liberal field – would be shunned or overlooked for something that is so irrelevant to the talent. When even my son “gets” it, I guess I have to admit that my picture of reality is a little bit airbrushed and photoshopped. And if Adam taught me that, it is a good thing and a lesson I needed to learn.

But if this album isn’t nominated for best album, I won’t be able to believe that it is for any reason other than that Adam is gay.

  41. sparkle says:

I just went to my local radio station’s website. I read through their entire playlist of 400 songs, and, unless I overlooked one of Adam’s songs by accident, there isn’t a single song listed – not NCOE, not BTIKM or even WWFM. Yet they have one of Orianthi’s songs!! And this is the station that I believe (correct me if I’m wrong, eywflyer) was the first to play BTIKM!!! I don’t understand – I guess I need to send an e-mail to the station and see what kind of response I get!

  43. Kradamour says:

Sparkle, I just followed your lead. My local station actually had NCOE on the playlist before. It is gone. Nothing Adam has been played for days. And this was the only station in this market to play him.

    I just feel so helpless.

  44. Kradamour says:

Listening to that Beat interview…ironically, Adam just repeated that he is a post-gay performer in a pre-gay world.
    Cry Cry Cry
It continues…Adam is so articulate and thoughtful. Gonna save this interview.
And he stays positive. I love that he repeated also that his fans make him feel safe.

  45. luval says:

I heard WWFM today on my local station. Same station as the dj I had e-mailed. No NCOE. Kradamour, helpless is the word. Everything is beyond our control. I’d love to know how many of the dozens and dozens of radio stations Adam visited ever play NCOE.

    Dear Kradamour, you’re not alone.

Everyone I know has done everything they can possibly do to make this CD a big success.

Granted everyone I know doesn’t include the entire world. Smile

We gave it our best shot though, didn’t we!

Speaking though of the entire world, I do think now that Adam will be a super star overseas more than he will ever be in North America.

  48. ultimathule says:

Watched that insipid “Boyfriend” video – so utterly boring (unless you’re 12 or 13, I guess). The Bieb seems to be a nice kid, but he’s about as interesting as watching grass grow. Guess with Adam’s haircut and an attempt at a sexier vibe they’re trying to transition him to a more adult type of music. His eyes look vacant. He dances better than he sings, as well. Yes, folks, drum the kid’s voice into our ears until we actually believe he’s worthy to be a star. Gawd, it’s all so pathetic and infuriating at the same time.
