After a very busy couple of weeks of promo and radio concerts following the release of “Trespassing” on May 15, Adam will head to London early this month to begin preparations for his upcoming concerts with Queen. He will do some album promo and a couple of live performances in the UK as well, where Trespassing is set for a July 2 release date. One of these shows is the “Rays of Sunshine” charity event at the very prestigious Royal Albert Hall in London. Adam will also return briefly to the US for a free radio concert in San Francisco on June 24.

Our featured photo (Brian Ach – Getty Images) for this month shows Adam in a very happy mood while performing at the KTUPhoria radio concert. Enjoy the chat!

    LA PRESSE
    MONTREAL SATURDAY 2 JUIN 2012
    Journalist – Émilie Côté

    ADAM LAMBERT

Kindness personified Nice. Honest. Generous. Three adjectives that often do not apply to pop stars, but ideally suited to Adam Lambert. American Idol Season eight finalist has just launched his second album, Trespassing. Adam Lambert has performed at the International de Montgolfières in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu and the Festival in Ste-Agathe en Feux last year. He decided to devote two days to promote his album Trespassing in Montreal, because of Quebec’s huge fanbase. Whether during his walkabout at MuchMusic, Wednesday, or with the media at the W Hotel on Thursday morning, Adam Lambert is a very nice pop star in an interview. He did not mince his words ”The industry underestimates the public,” he says. Or: ‘artists who say they do not read reviews, it’s bullshit!” While admitting:’ Yes, I think of radio when making songs, because I have to think about the business side. ”Before enrolling in American Idol, Adam Lambert performed in musicals. During a year of thinking that led to the Burning Man festival, he decided to take a creative risk and to register to audition to the famous competition. ” I learned a lot from American Idol, he says. I learned about the industry and myself as an artist and human being. Become popular places to test your personality. People say they do not change, but this is not true: you have to adjust (…) but I would not change anything that I’ve become.
    PLUS LIBRE ( FREER )
Adam Lambert felt freer in the creation of his second album that begins with club music with various dance tracks, finishing off with ballads. He had more time to create than for his first album (For Your Entertainment completed in two months in the middle of a tour), but also because he was able to find a ”normal life”. ”I began a wonderful relationship, he adds. All this has given me perspective and allowed me to write longer and be more grounded. ”On its release day, Trespassing reached the top of the Billboard charts. Journalists were then told that this was a first for an openly gay artist. The media has said that Adam Lambert made his coming out after American Idol. ” It’s weird, because I’ve been out of the closet since 18. and 10 years later, it was a hot topic during the auditions of American Idol (…) After the show, in an interview with Rolling Stone journalist, I was talking about a relationship with a guy and she said: So you’re gay? I said yes!” Says Adam Lambert.

For the singer, it was clear to the public that he was homosexual. ”This is what happens when you pass from alternative to mainstream. You must think differently.” Adam Lambert has worked with major names for his album ( Pharrell Williams, Dr. Luke and Bruno Mars), He wrote the first drafts of lyrics of his songs and he manages his image and glam look. Is it hard to be creative in the world of pop? ” Its negotiations ”, he says. The idea behind is to create pop music for a mainstream general public. For me it’s a challenge to be an eccentric and flamboyant gay singer, but I’m proof that it is possible (…) The music is very focused right now on making money and being commercial, but the good news is that artists like Adele break the mold.’ ‘Adam Lambert will depart shortly for Europe to take the place of Freddie Mercury with the Queen musicians. ” We’ll do six shows in Eastern Europe and London. I am honored, he said. Then, I will continue promoting and I’ll think of my tour scheduled to begin next winter.

Good afternoon y’all. This is gonna be one of those numbers posts. I’ll try not to be angsty though. Looking at the add histories for WWFM/IIHY/BTIKM and comparing them to NCOE reveals some interesting trends.

WWFM – radio impact date 11/24/09
    Pre-impact adds: 0 Top 40, 0 HAC
Impact week adds: 0 Top 40, 1 HAC
Second week adds: 19 Top 40, 8 HAC
Third week adds: 8 Top 40, 5 HAC
Final add total: 120 Top 40, 79 HAC
Peak chart positions: #10 Billboard Hot 100, #2 US Adult Pop Songs, #12 US Pop Songs
Notes: the slow impact week start for this song was likely affected by the Thanksgiving holiday and hangover from the AMAs. It really took off the second week with a total of 27 adds in its two main formats.

IIHY – radio impact date 5/11/10
    Pre-impact adds: 2 Top 40, 0 HAC
Impact week adds: 8 Top 40, 0 HAC
Second week adds: 9 Top 40, 0 HAC
Third week adds: 7 Top 40, 0 HAC
Final add total: 127 Top 40, 65 HAC
Peak chart positions: #30 Billboard Hot 100, #16 US Pop Songs
Notes: clearly IIHY was picked up by Top 40 first then crossed over to HAC, as the first HAC add did not occur until 6/7/10. Also interesting to note that IIHY actually was added to more Top 40 stations than WWFM, yet peaked lower on that chart (#16 vs #12), showing that it’s about spins too not just adds.

BTIKM – radio impact date 1/24/12
    Pre-impact adds: 3 Top 40, 12 HAC
Impact week adds: 1 Top 40, 4 HAC
Second week adds: 7 Top 40, 4 HAC
Third week adds: 6 Top 40, 5 HAC
Final add total: 26 Top 40, 60 HAC
Peak chart positions: #76 Billboard Hot 100, #18 US Adult Pop Songs, #50 Mediabase Top 40 Airplay
Notes: it didn’t become clear until about mid February that BTIKM was stalling out, when it had a two week period with just 3 Top 40 adds and 5 HAC adds. These were the fourth and fifth weeks relative to the impact date.

NCOE – radio impact date 5/29/12
    Pre-impact adds: 3 Top 40, 16 HAC
Impact week adds: 7 Top 40, 6 HAC
Total adds to date: 10 Top 40, 22 HAC
Highest chart positions to date: #37 Mediabase HAC Airplay, #67 Mediabase Top 40 Airplay
Notes: NCOE appears to be doing better with pre-impact adds, but this is likely a function of the late offical impact date relative to when the song was released.

Looking at Mediabase airplay charts, NCOE is tracking very close to BTIKM at this point in its cycle, almost a week after the impact date. I’d say that the next four weeks will probably determine the fate of the song on Top 40 radio. WWFM had 57 Top 40 adds in weeks 2-5 after impact date (not counting the Christmas freeze weeks), IIHY had 23 Top 40 adds in weeks 2-5, but BTIKM only had 15 Top 40 adds in weeks 2-5, with only 2 adds in week 4 and zero in week 5.

HAC tends to move more slowly and is harder to predict IMO. WWFM only had 17 HAC adds in week 2-5, but kept steadily plugging away with adds all the way into spring 2010 to end up with a total of 79. As mentioned above, IIHY crossed over from Top 40 to HAC later in its cycle, with only 1 HAC add in weeks 2-5, then zero adds in weeks 6-8. It didn’t really get going on HAC until August 2010 when it had 31 adds in four weeks. BTIKM had 18 HAC adds in weeks 2-5, and would end up with a respectable total of 60 adds, but just didn’t get enough good (daytime) spins on the stations that added it.

As for the album sales, I see Trespassing in a pretty similar spot to where FYE was in late November 2009. FYE dropped 76% its second week, Trespassing dropped 71%. Judging by the iTunes, Amazon and Walmart sales rankings I’ve seen in the last few days, we should expect Trespassing to drop a good bit more on this week’s sales chart. FYE was rescued by WWFM becoming a major hit. Trespassing is going to need NCOE to become at least a moderate hit (similar to IIHY and considerably better than BTIKM), enough to get a third single released, when RCA would hopefully go with one of Adam’s own songs like Naked Love or Cuckoo.

This week’s Target ad has Trespassing listed on sale for $11.99 (regular, not deluxe ed) under the heading “Chart-topping hits for less”.
Listed with: Adele, John Mayer, One Direction tour DVD, Lady Antebellum, Nicki Minaj, Carrie Underwood, Glee, and Jason Mraz.

    Pretty good company!

  23. luval says:

Thanks for those numbers, eywflyer. I hope Adam’s absence from the country doesn’t impact things too badly. But I have a feeling something’s gonna breakout on this record and we are all going to be pleasantly surprised. Don’t know what makes me think this because I’m usually Debbie Downer. Just feel upbeat today about Trespassing.

  24. luval says:

Can someone locate that “million moms” thing?

So if anyone wants to find other sites with the same photo:
    just search “Adam Lambert”
select the “images” option from the left
then click on the camera icon in the search box at the top.
Finally paste the link of the photo that you have and several similar images should appear. And then the real searching begins…

AL Thanks for the google info…tried it and got as far as pasting the link and couldn’t make it happen….but I’ll try again sometime.

luval, the newest thing with one million moms has to do with their outrage at the new Green Lantern coming out as gay. They were bombarded with posts supporting the Green Lantern and that is why they took down their facebook page . Here is an article about it.

  35. Kradamour says:

“the hate group One Million Moms”

I just love that phrase from the article; it is patently a bizarre juxtaposition and really underscores how un-Mom the group really is.

    Wink

  36. dcglam says:

Trespassing is going to need NCOE to become at least a moderate hit (similar to IIHY and considerably better than BTIKM), enough to get a third single released, when RCA would hopefully go with one of Adam’s own songs like Naked Love or Cuckoo.

I love both of these songs, but I’m feeling there are radio issues with them.
eywflyer, what are your thoughts about Trespassing as the next single? I don’t see the radio issues as I do with some of the others. Also, that song seems to be already catching on. I especially took notice of the Singapore dancers and line dancing that asif posted earlier today. That song seems to already be getting out there.
Just thinking “out loud” here…. Wink

  37. luval says:

In regards to radio play all I have to go by is the DJ who is also the music director at my local station and his e-mail to me. He says “room is tight at the moment. Some songs are doing better than his that aren’t even on yet”. They will continue to discuss it at their music meetings.

I don’t want to stalk him to ask questions, but what does it REALLY take to have a song played on the radio? How are songs that haven’t been played doing better? So a number one album doesn’t count for anything? What was the thing that made WWFM all of a sudden take off?

  38. eywflyer says:

dcglam, I like Trespassing the single, but to me it has a somewhat old school type sound that may not fit in well at Top 40 now. I know Cuckoo would need a radio edit to get rid of the f-word a couple of times, but I’d think that could be done easily enough without ruining the song. Naked Love – hmm. Any artist other than Adam would have zero problems with that song, but yea knowing how cowardly radio is regarding all things Adam they might not play it just based on the title alone – I don’t know.

In any case, my belief is that a third single is not a given at this point – it’s going to depend on how well NCOE does.

ETA: I didn’t think to mention Kickin In earlier, it’s actually one of my favorites of the up-tempo portion of the album, but unfortunately the lyrics of that song would probably cause radio problems. The gay double standard at work again. Radio probably ain’t gonna play Adam talking about getting introduced to her friend Eddie who has a dirty mind and is persuasive…

  39. luval says:

eywflyer…I remember a few weeks back that Adam was saying something about “milking” the album or getting as many singles as possible out of it. I think this was in response to someone asking when he was touring. So if radio just won’t play them, then maybe he will tour sooner rather than later. I really think he will tour…single on the radio or not. Even if he has to fund it himself like GN. That is where the money is and will be. He knows how to be frugal!

  40. dcglam says:

    I agree with you, luval.
The bottom line is that if NCOE doesn’t make it as a single, I don’t know what will. And yes, he will make $,$$$,$$$ touring no matter what. The guy is a natural PERFORMER!!

  41. luval says:

I wish he’d do a duet with Barbra Streisand. Wouldn’t it be funny if something “out of the box” like that would explode him on to middle America?

  42. Kradamour says:

    Barbra Streisand?
    Question Thinking Question
Dunno, luval, Barbra was never really relevant to young people. My parents liked her.
Today, I doubt that anyone much under 30 even really knows who she is.

If he wants to go “out the box”, I’d go with Cher. She is still out there performing, still outrageous, has a killer voice (still), and I seem to remember that she has been very complimentary about Adam. I would LOVE that performance!

Re singles…I can see Kickin’ In with a radio edit. I can see Naked Love, too.
I agree that Trespassing sounds too old school if Adam wants to really break out.
He needs something fresh and amazing and fierce.
I’d go with Shady (btw, that’s a word that my kids use all the time) and the song is so dance-y!
I think that RCA made a huge marketing error in going with “safe” material as singles.

I also agree that Adam will tour regardless (and of course we will be there!) – if the album doesn’t take off, he really won’t have the option not to.

  43. glambotgram says:

    Cooper Smith ‏@daddycooper

@adamlambert thanks for the support! (From the dad on the right in the ad)

  44. luval says:

    What ad?

  45. sparkle says:

Hi everyone here at ALL, lurkers and non-lurkers alike! If we’re talking duets, I’ d love to hear a duet with Kelly. As I’ve said before, love “Dark Side” on her new album – seems like she and Adam has gone through similar love life problems and would sound awesome together. However, more obvious choices would be Katy Perry (since they are already friends) or Ke$ha ( what has she done lately? – good business opportunity for both of them) Am I cuckoo for thinking this?

  46. luval says:

The only reason I mention Barbra was because she would be 180 degrees from the usual peeps we’d want him to duet with. And it would NOT be for the young people! The voices are the only things I’m thinking of. Sparkle…all nice ideas.

Kradamour, I think Shady too would be a good one for radio. Although I love Cuckoo. Just edit f*** and substitute crap!

Has Adam actually left for Europe yet? Maybe he’ll attend the MTV movie awards tonight.

  47. sparkle says:

glambotgram – you are cracking me up about the Cossack pants! BTW – I wore an eggplant colored top for the WB concert because I had heard about eggplant so much on here, I figured it was an honorary tour color! LOL!

  48. luval says:

    Very funny, sparkle!

The Adele special is on in 15 minutes. She’ll sell thousands of cd’s after this. The previews said “she doesn’t want to be a celebrity”. Come on!!

  49. little dutchess says:

It’s so hard playing catch-up but it seems to be my way. So many things to comment on.

asifclueless Thanks for the Les Miz movie trailer. Knew they were doing a movie but didn’t know this dar along. My favorite musical of all time. Plan on seeing it again for the umpteenth time when in London. Then after Adam/Queen we have tickets for a concert in the forest en route to Scotland to see Alfie Boe (“England’s tenor”) who played Jean Valjean for the 25th Anniversary of Les Mis at the O2 and also did a 5-6 month stint as Valjean when they introduced the ‘updated version’ of Les Miz in London. From one tenor to the next!

  50. Calgary says:

Hey, have you noticed? Or am I just really slow to pick up on the fact that almost nobody is talking about his faux pas at the AMA’s any more? That’s a step in the right direction!
