Adam Lambert was the first gay artist who was out since he was signed to have a #1 album on Billboard.
Adam and Rufus are both gay trailblazers. The difference is Adam has never felt a need to dis a fellow artist to promote an album.

I don’t know what On Top Mag and Rufus Wainwright were going on about, their claim was unsupported in every way.
He was openly gay, but wasn’t on a major label, and his album wasn’t even near #1 on the Billboart 200 (#117). His label was DreamWorks.
“ On June 5, 2001, Wainwright’s second album, Poses, was released to critical acclaim but limited sales. The album ranked No.117 on the Billboard 200 and No.1 on the Top Heatseekers chart.”
As I remember, Adam was also first openly gay artist signed to a major label, RCA.
And his albums, FYE #3, Trespassing #1, TOH #3 all on the Billboard 200 chart.
