Spoke with my sister, cher – her strongest recommendations were to stick with the rehab and do NOT rush trying to walk – particularly keeping the “boot” on as long as recommended. But there’s no way round it – it’s a nasty injury – she’s fine now and can walk those New York streets very well – but it took time. (She was in her late 60’s when it happened – younger ankles probably heal faster from her observations of other patients.)

cher I hope your surgery went well! A few years ago I had my foot bolted together and I was 12 weeks on crutches. I got myself a walker with a seat which I sat on to zip around the house. Now they have neat ‘knee scooters’ that you can take anywhere and are way easier to deal with (except maybe on stairs) than crutches. You kneel your injured leg on the ‘seat’ which is at the right height for a knee, and use the other foot to push. It has a handlebar, just like a regular scooter. And 4 wheels so it doesn’t tip. I wish they had been around when I was a gimp. I did manage to get out a lot thanks to kind friends. The worst part was putting the watertight plastic bag over my foot/leg so I could have a shower. It took 20 minutes…but then again I didn’t have a lot else to do! Wishes for a painless and speedy recovery!
Calgary, you are so right about knee scooters. They are just perfect, in the right circumstances. I work in rehab, we have one next to my desk!!
I’m sure that Cher will be getting plenty of rehab when the time is right.

Thanks for the good wishes everyone. Happy for modern medicine and a youngish surgeon. Done outpatient and sent home. Am still a bit groggy and nauseous but in good spirits. My son already said he’ll get me a knee scooter when I am ready. Just happened to see one at the ortho doc’s office yesterday. Can’t listen to/watch Adam stuff when hubby is around and he has been here a lot but that’s okay. He is my salvation right now. Has been a saint poor guy. Y’all can imagine how miserable I am being confined. Or maybe you can’t. He said I was being a bitch earlier but that it was good because that meant I was feeling better.

So glad you are in good spirits – truthfully, after meeting you in Toronto, I can’t even picture you NOT in good spirits but you are definitely entitled to have a pity party! I’ll join you – I’ve been having one myself most of today worrying about not being employable. The 2 fortune cookies I got with dinner were similar – snap out of it and do something about it. So Adam is #4 out of the 50 hottest Jewish men of 2014. The funniest thing is that just about all of the comments are saying that #4 is the hottest and should be #1 (especially hotter that #2-Adam Levine, lol)
Mils, being invalid doesn’t make me sleep any more. Guess only anesthesia. Well, poor tired hubby went to bed late again because of me for the past several nights and left my crutches by the room door so I was unable to go to the bathroom and didn’t want to wake him up so I just played on my computer til he woke up by chance. Now I am no longer sleepy.
Too many want to visit. ( How do I say no?) My house is messy. Adam time took up my cleaning time. 
My New Year’s resolution was to throw out lots of stuff but now can’t do it for a while. My adopted daughter and girlfriend were doing a bit today but I eventually stopped them because so much stuff is personal and actually 
I have so much Adam stuff it’s embarrassing1!! Hidden everywhere and lots not even hidden, just all over. Saw hubby putting some Adam cds and dvds together in a box and not complaining about it like he usually does. 
I was having a pity party since the fall. When I fell I hurt so badly that I had cold sweat and wanted to throw up and bawl like a baby. I didn’t cry because so many people were staring at me. I only took Motrin on and off since then. I think the sprained foot hurt worse because I have to hop on it. I finally did get to cry the night before surgery like I mentioned before and it really helped. My poor aunt got the brunt of it but assured me I had to let it out somehow then I called my mom in Toronto who has ALZ and she didn’t understand why I was crying of course and that made me cry even harder. My sister who mom lives with then told me to buckle up because what I have is treatable. What mom and many other people have are not. I knew that but I really got it after that. I was terrified before the surgery for the surgery itself and for what lays ahead but once I woke up from anesthesia I was happy again.
Downside is my ankle is pretty much bionic now. My adopted daughter saw the post surgery xray and said it looks like a gladiator’s sandal. Has too much metal to be counted. Won’t be able to walk on that foot for 3 months and physical therapy won’t be easy. Upside outweighs that by far. No serious illness. Life is good. Family, friends and glamily have been here for me. So many people offering help, even the most unlikely ones.

lol cher, when you didn’t answer my email I thought you were asleep, but I should have known better. Glad you are surrounded by loving friends and family who want to help, even if it sometimes seems too much. It is better than the alternative. From now on you are going to set off bells and whistles every time you go through a metal detector!
