Sort of quiet tonight, so I feel a mini rant coming. Ulti, I feel that slow burn too. Maybe I’m unreasonable, but can’t help it.
It’s lovely that all those straight performers are allied with the LGBT movement, kudos to Macklemore, and especially Madonna who has been dedicated for over 30 years. But until those straight performers and industry types nominate and vote for more gay artists, until they perform in award shows regularly, I feel the fight is far from over. And Mary lambert singing a Few lines in Same Love doesn’t do it for me – token presence.
At all these events, aside from female artists like Katy, Kathy Griffin, Kelly O, Fergie, and icons like Nile, Queen, what other artists have we seen in fotos with Adam? He worked with Pharrell in his Miami studio for two weeks, back when Pharrell was pretty much in the shadows. He worked with Bruno for a week in studio. Ever seen a pic of them together?
I’m happy for the success he has, and the recognition he’s been getting from Glaad, Trevor Project, the AT&T sponsored campaign, Cities of LA and Miami Beach and Pittsburgh. But still unhappy with the music industry and TPTB. I hope a Queen tour happens, more wonderful Glee appearances and new music, and this year will bring change – REAL tangible visible change.
jlurks- Thanks for the Charity Water link. I’m sending Adam’s birthday gift to them again this year. They perform an essential service in 3rd world countries and give us feedback on where the money is going. I sat through the seemingly endless WAFF presentations last year waiting to hear Adam sing and still have no idea where their money actually goes. As much as I like Nile, I’d rather give my money to drill wells so families can have clean drinking water.

Great that these straight artists support the gay cause, aely – perhaps it’ll help. My gripe is more with the music biz itself which will countenance gay female interactions, but not any by a highly sexual gay male like Adam. (Think Ron addressed something in the same vein a couple of pages ago.)
Perhaps because females are viewed as less aggressive, it’s more palatable to the viewing public to accept. That the AMA’s are still being noted as an outlier would seem to validate this.

Listened/watched that video about Macklemore…gay vs straight and her somewhat angry, harsh tone made me not want to listen to what she was saying. And trying to “sell” her youtube site at the end turned me off.

I like to think Adam started the conversation with the AMA’s. Someone had to do it by pushing (even if it was unintentional on his part at the time) the boundaries – he got the backlash and it did hurt him in a lot of ways but it also helped him become who he is and become a strong voice to fight for equal rights in a very real way. I don’t believe him being gay is the reason he didn’t get radio play. I don’t think his label played the game. He had to much success with his first album to make me believe that argument. I think he wanted and asked for control – RCA gave it to him and he lost. He was ahead of his time and it didn’t work. When the first single didn’t connect they were done. If it caught on organically, like Macklemore, then maybe they would have pushed more but the bottom line is he couldn’t sell the album.
Saying all that, I have all kinds of gripes with the way the game is played and do think he has more struggles than a straight guy but I can’t help looking at the other Idols and think he has WAY more success than 90% of them and he didn’t even win. He was the third place Idol earner with an album that didn’t do well and no real tour. That speaks volumes and I think he is setting himself up to have an amazing career bumpy ride and all.
But, yes, the fight is FAR from over and I get pissed off all the time but I do believe it is moving in the right direction. That is something I don’t think I have felt before.
The question, aely, has always been – why was BTIKM the first single – was that Adam’s decision or someone else’s? It was certainly not the track that previewers favored.
And agree, feel more optimistic now than a few months ago.
Not a clue. Wasn’t around then. I did read in some interview with Claude Kelly that he said to this day he just can’t understand what happened with that single. He said in his career that song and one other (can’t remember which one) were the 2 he is still baffled about. He had a great track record and my GUESS is they trusted that.
Regardless of what single was released his album didn’t sell well here or in the other countries that he had so much success in with FYE. Even if the singles didn’t work if he could have retained his fan base and sold albums like FYE sold (or at least somewhat close) they would have kept trying. But not selling either they are just not going to put any more money into it.
I had NO CLUE what happened to Adam until he showed up at the EMA’s with Queen. I think he has a better team behind him now, especially with 19R gone, and has worked hard to stay more on people’s radar, ie, fans, media and execs. I will be shocked if it doesn’t turn out VERY differently this time and would not be surprised if he winds up back on a world tour opening for someone huge or solo.

Was around during that time, aely, and the discussion was extensive – remember “Cuckoo” was a favorite of a Brit panel. Fans were unhappy that Adam’s songs were passed by as a single. Perhaps Adam chose BTIKM, but find that hard to believe. IMO, Claude simply penned a mediocre track. No guarantee that one of Adam’s would have done better, but couldn’t have done worse.
But, we’ll never know until he writes his memoirs, I presume.
Yeah, I didn’t start really following him until closer to his album drop date. If I remember correctly FYE single did nothing but he still managed to sell a ton of albums (and stay on BB 200 for almost a year, I just read that recently) and then had a big hit with WWFM. If that had happened with this album they might have taken more risks. But, who knows, that is just my personal reasoning and best guess.
Man, I would LOVE to read his book!! That would be fascinating.
I love that kid they were talking about when Adam was brought up. He is one that got my attention watching the auditions.

aely: I agree very much with you. I really don’t have to look far to find lots of males that are very uncomfortable around gay men. They tend to have much less of a problem with lesbians: mostly I see this slightly amused/ridiculing reaction. But never any “disgusting” comments. I tend to think it’s because a lesbian does not physically threaten a straight man, whereas a gay man theoretically could (however unlikely that is). The very same men don’t seem to realize that this is everyday life for women: no woman can walk down the street in the dark without fear of being assaulted by a man, and as we all know it happens all the time. Mad world.

Not sure, aely, can compare dropping an album coming right off Idol and one issued 2-1/2 years later. FYE song was gone after AMA’s, and the catchy WWFM hit the ground running.
Nothing catchy about BTIKM. Mistake whoever decided that one.
That’s why when see Pharrell and Nile get Grammy’s for lesser songs instead of TR, Shady, and KI, it hurts. As Billboard said, “in a fairer pop universe . . . .”

I actually love BTIKM, (even my husband liked it, and my daughter said it was the best single Adam had done)…..And I see absolutely no reason why it wasn’t a big hit on HAC, like WWFM. But its a catch 22, radio wouldn’t play it so no one heard it, so it didn’t sell so radio wouldn’t play it…..I think the few stations that did play it, aired it during the night not peak listening times.
Does anyone have any recent numbers for Trespassing??? I think its around 200,000 copies sold, whilst way down on FYE is much better than many artists…
Is there any way that even though Adam isn’t with a record label he could release a single independently. They should release Shady, with Niles’ help….he’s such a big name now, I’m sure it would do well.
I agree ulti there was no way he was going to sell the same as right after Idol (and I honestly don’t know a ton of details about FYE) but after over a year and a half the last numbers we have TSP hasn’t even sold the number of albums he sold of FYE in 1 week. That is the bigger issue to me than picking a single and I would bet no way would he or his label have thought it would sell that poorly.
HKfan From what I understand he would have to buy back the rights to the song from RCA and 19 and that is VERY expensive. I don’t know any details but that would be interesting to try and find out. I like BTIKM also and WWFM gets on my last nerve! The last number I could find for TSP was 186,000.
Again, I REALLY REALLY believe TSP was a year ahead of its time. Dance/Disco/Funk music like Kickin’ In and Shady would have fit in MUCH better this May on radio than last.
