2013 will apparently begin with a rather quiet month for Adam, as he has only one performance currently scheduled. This will be a Hennessy Artistry event in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam on January 4. After that, Adam’s next scheduled event is the kickoff of his international “non-tour” in Seoul, South Korea on February 17. There is no official word as yet on whether some North American dates will eventually be added to the non-tour in the spring, but recent comments from Adam have not been very optimistic.

Above we see Adam performing at his final concert of 2012, at the Mulia Resort in Bali, Indonesia. Happy New Year and enjoy the chat!

    My favorite part

To make matters worse we’re all supposed to be super impressed because the songs (and by “songs” I mean “every single word uttered during the course of the entire picture”) are performed live instead of being recorded in a studio and dubbed into the film. “GEE WOW I’M SO ENAMORED WITH YOUR ARTISTIC INTEGRITY”. Is that the reaction I’m supposed to have? I don’t know because my initial reaction was something like “Man, this sounds awful”. Instead of lip syncing pre-recorded songs, the actors sputtered out of key while choking back tears and gasping for breath. It was like listening to someone sing karaoke while being chased by a swarm of African killer bees. Coincidentally, that is the actual premise of a reality show on TruTV. Except that show likely has more depth and intelligence. I don’t care if the “let’s do it live” move was “revolutionary”. Not all revolutions are good. Just ask France.

This is the time that Adam not getting the AI gig really hurts. Instead of weekly appearances on millions of TV sets he will be invisible outside of the fandom, barring another -gate of some sort.

I brought your comment over from the Hennessy thread so I could say that there might be one good thing about his absence – we all might get some work done ROTFL Wink ROTFL

Agree, Calgary, my house is starting to look like Miss Havisham’s.

  9. luval says:

Talking about home…Home Planet is back.

  10. milwlovesadam says:

I simply cannot imagine the zig-zag of a ride it must be to travel so far, see so many wonderful things, get pumped up to perform such a wild show, then pack and fly quietly home.

And do that over and over again.

So, I wonder if Adam and Sauli are coming home too, or going somewhere else for a private vacay?

LOL I’d love to see what Adam thinks about Django…

  11. milwlovesadam says:

No sooner did I post that, and he’s home!!

  12. luval says:

    yay! he’s home now too!

Home! Watched “Looper” on the flight. Great film!! Also episodes of “Up All Night” kept me laughing. Now time for a LONG sleep.

Yup. That’s my story. And I’m sticking to it.

  15. milwlovesadam says:

Something tells me he doesn’t have “nothing” to do until Feb 17th.

  16. LadyNorth says:

Just read a tweet that Adam and Sauli were spotted in HK (without luggage?) and now at home. Yay Smile

That guy’s review of LesMis was funny (thanks luval!), but I wouldn’t take him to see any musical or opera. Lol. Why is it that for so many men musicals, sentimental movies and opera are torture? I have heard this before so many times. How about your hubbies?

I am lost with all the Vietnam performance vids. Which are the best? I have watched so many I can’t count any more. Vids from the site http://giaitri.vnexpress.net (one posted above too) are good ones but has anyone managed to download them?

But there’s plenty of time to watch all of them before the next show. So I had some RL today. Outdoors. Baking brownies (yammy!). Watched Avatar on my TV (impressive visual sceneries, sometimes scifi fairy tales are nice to see, even without a deep story) and Mamma Mia musical movie too. Singing… Frown – my guy said immediately why can’t they hire peeps who can sing. But I love the songs and know the lyrics so I just sang along Smile. Singing myself to sleep now!

  17. milwlovesadam says:

So. I have a confession to make about Mama Mia. I used to love Abba back in the day. I think a lot of people did, but wouldn’t say it out loud, too pop, too not “cool’, anyway, I saw Mama Mia on stage and loved it so much. So, I went to the movie on opening day with high hopes.

It’s the only movie I have ever seen that I walked out of the theater. I just couldn’t take it with the extremely bad singing. I couldn’t even enjoy the scenery, or just look at Streep and Brosnan, and try to imagine it being better. I was “lifted out” like Adam said about Les Miz.

The only saving grace in that movie was Christine Baranski, who is fabulous in everything she does. Chicago, that sitcom with Cybill Shepard, Big Bang Theory, Good Wife, and so many other roles. Now, she can sing.

  18. rs says:

mils, ITA with you. I didn’t walk out because I love Abba, too. They were very popular here, but it was the only film with Meryl Streep in which I felt she was totally miscast. I kept imagining Cher in that role. She would have been the perfect ex wandering American kid and boy can she sing!

  19. Kradamour says:

Cher and Adam. A duet. My dream.
    In Love

  20. HK fan says:

I loved the stage version of Mamma Mia, and I loved the film (didn’t see it at the cinema though). I thought Meryl Streep was great, I thought they were all great, even Pierce Brosnan, even though his singing was so bad. In fact several of them had weak voices, but it was such a lighthearted, feelgood film, that the comedy and bad voices just added to it.

  21. Calgary says:

LadyNorth I laughed out loud at that Les Mis review and the part about what his wife had to watch had me rolling on the floor ’cause it’s pretty much like that around here too! Well not quite so bad – it’s more tit for tat. Actually my dh does go to musicals and we loved the original London Les Mis. But I know if I sent him that review he wouldn’t go. In fact he may not anyway. And I’m not so sure I really want to go either after all the reviews!

  22. Calgary says:

mils I’m a big Christine Baranski fan too!I did see Mamma Mia and like HKfan I enjoyed it for the show, the visuals, the tunes and Christine. OMG they are playing Some guy singing A Change is Gonna Come! Jarvis Church – sings it like a sad balled. NO comparison!

  23. Kradamour says:

I don’t think that my husband and I have seen a movie together for at least ten years, probably more. We agreed a long while ago that there was no need to force the other to go to a movie that wasn’t to his/her taste. I go with friends or alone (theater is only a block from home) and this really works well for us. (But I was a navy wife with a deployed husband for 20 years, and that does create comfort with a very separate life in lots of contexts).

  24. luval says:

Kradamour…I remember you’ve said in the past your dream collab would be Adam & Cher. Is there a particular song or cover of one that would be your dream? Or maybe they could come up with something new. I would love to see them come together one day too. Sooner rather than later.

eta: this may seem off the wall but I would love them to duet on Hallelujah.

  25. TLKC says:

Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves…just kidding. Hallelujah is an off-the-wall idea, luval, but I bet they would do a great job of it.

Re: Mamma Mia – I went to see the movie with a bunch of people who loved the stage production and laughed my head off. It wasn’t until I watched it at home one night on TV that I realized it was awful. Cher probably would have been better than Meryl Streep but, with the entire cast singing off-key, wouldn’t she have sounded out-of-place?

Add me to the Christine Baranski train. Love her in all her characters. The Good Wife is one of my favourite shows – kills me that it is in conflct with Downton Abbey tomorrow night.

Nice to know we can take a breather for the next few weeks. About the housework ulti, perhaps we could motivate ourselves to tidy up our places by imagining that we are “sharing the moment” with Adam and Sauli as they unpack and fix up their new home.

  26. riskylady says:

OK, I watched all the fan vids and one high-def vid from Hennessy, and there was NOTHING inappropriate in AYGGMW. I do think Adam noticed that they were being ignored on the large screens and made sure Tommy got his solo (there was a HUGE Tommy sign right in front of him) then ended it. Don’t blame him – they treated that performance as if it was the credits of a movie. Annoying. That was a big highlight of the Shanghai Hennessy concert, why wouldn’t Vietnam want to capitalize on it?

I love seconds 0:20 to 0:35 in this fan vid from up high, where Adam comes dancing out to start Cuckoo – so spectacular when his height is so apparent yet he moves so well! Will try to make a gif when I can find my password LOL.

I’m pretty sure he will be busy the rest of this time – maybe polishing up/even redesigning the show some for the upcoming non-tour – there are some good-sized venues ahead. Plus, they probably have to decide on openers, etc. and I believe he gets involved in that, too.

  27. riskylady says:

Oh, funny story abt Les Miz. My second son and his 14-yr-old daughter were dragged to see the movie because daughter-in-law READ THE BOOK LOL! He and his daughter HATED it! He compared it to a mental root canal without anesthesia LOL. So, he made her go to see Jack Reacher with them….
He said the worst part of the movie was seeing the tonsils of the “non-singers” during their close-ups, said that maybe without zooming in like that it would have been more endurable, more like a regular movie.

Maybe work in a TV show! I need Adam on my TV!

  30. TLKC says:

Let’s face it, even if the vocals were good, a lot of people still wouldn’t enjoy Les Miz. Musicals aren’t everyone’s cup of tea.

Spent this afternoon with a friend who is a Russell Crowe fanatic. She was quite upset about Adam’s comments. Interestingly, though, she didn’t like Russell’s vocals either. She just felt that Adam should have kept his mouth shut.

She didn’t know about Russell’s tweet and reduced fire when I told her what he had said.

She still feels that the director’s “raw” approach is better but she had read the scathing New Yorker review by Anthony Lane and told me that the magazine’s other reviewer had also weighed in and didn’t like it either. (Unusual for both reviewers to cover the same film so Denby must have wanted to get his feelings off his chest.)

We are still friends but this hasn’t done anything to improve her opinion of Adam. I’m going to have to give up on converting her.

  31. TLKC says:

Oh, I love that tweet, nkd. I wonder who they are, too.

  32. TLKC says:

I wonder if the camera man was told that there wasn’t enough crowd footage and so he focussed on that at the end and got carried away. The audience shots are pretty great. They were really into it. Not what we wanted to see, of course.

We have no idea how they view sexually-charged performances. There may be some broadcasting rules. Maybe they saw the Shanghai footage and decided to err on the side of caution. Who knows?

  38. Kradamour says:

WOW! He hated it. The book, the story, the music, the movie.

Gotta say I have to fast-forward through a lot of all of them.
Victor Hugo didn’t write the book as a love story, although that is what the musical is focused on…he wrote a scathing political text that is pretty irrelevant in 2013.
Those barricades seem to last for.ev.er…you have to skip over about a hundred pages in the book while Hugo gets issues off of his chest.

Son went to see the movie and over-the-top loved it.
I think it is interesting the passion on both sides – no one just sort of likes it.

luval, Cher and Adam singing Hallelujah? I’d think I had died and gone to heaven.
But I’d also like to see them duet with something fun and dancy…If I Could Turn Back Time, I can totally see them moving all over the stage to that. Cher uses the stage much like Adam, I think. That song makes me all kinds of happy and if Adam joined her it would be happy overload. Can’t even imagine it. Mmmmm…..

    Time for bed.
Sweet Cher and Adam dreams, peeps!
    In Love

It just reminded me of my sister’s biggest complaint during Idol. She thought he screamed too much, and didn’t like the tongue. (Funny–I was fascinated by it.) At least they used “him” in the skit, even if it fed into the stereotype that many think of him. I’d rather people see the REAL thing though!

  47. ultimathule says:

Talked with son-in-law who’s sung professionally in New York – loves the stage musical and thinks the story is “deep.” However, was not a fan of how the movie was filmed with the close-up shots – nor of some of the singing – but still thinks it’s worth seeing.

Other family members criticized the way it was filmed, too.

  48. ultimathule says:
