After the “Top 2000 a gogo” and a couple of annual overview-like programs, Boxing Day on TV seemed nice. Until my mouth fell open from the documentary on NPO3 afterwards. Why haven’t I seen this before? Queen is touring again, and how! The band now has a full-fledged singer who does not take Freddie Mercury’s place but who carries the show in his own way.
The British documentary “Queen & Adam Lambert – The show must go on” (NTR) tells a simple story that never gets so sweet. Who on earth can sing the work of singer Freddie Mercury, who died of AIDS in 1991? At the Tribute to Freddie Mercury concert in 1992, at least 20 artists were needed to sing rock songs or ballads, opera pieces, gospel songs, or pop songs. Nobody controlled them all. How does such a band ever go beyond the stage of imitation and nostalgia?
After this documentary you involuntarily want to buy tickets for the shows next year, even if you didn’t fall in love with Queen in the past. Singer Adam Lambert (37) gives so much inspiration to those blazing songs that you want to experience that. Too late. Everything appears to be sold out.
Two universal themes in one. Every former top band up to and including The Stones wanted it not only to find new blood, but also to get a blood transfusion, as guitarist Brian May puts it.
Queen lost his face with the death of his singer. That was it, the other band members thought. Only years later did they see that their music also appeals to a young audience, through the musical “We Will Rock You” (from 2002) and the film “Bohemian Rhapsody” (2018). But can that music also live in the stadiums?
