As we wrap up another year of following Adam, it has been quite the global trip. He finally won a singing competition – as a judge in Australia. Does that count? Congrats to Isaiah! He is lucky to have Adam on his speed dial and as a mentor for the challenging world of the music business.
It should be a quiet month but we never know with Adam. Perhaps a New Years performance somewhere?! He has been off the stage for too long now so needs to get back on, if only for one night.
Happy Holidays to those celebrating!

Enjoy the chat!

  2. TLKC says:

The death of George Michael is so shocking and sad. It was really weird to find out late on Christmas Day that such a small part of my extended family was genuinely sad about his passing. The under 30’s, of which there are many, simply didn’t know who he was.

He was part of an era with fond memories for me: the start of music videos, the “Feed the World” Christmas anthem, Live Aid. The 90’s in pop were so Brit, so Sting, so Tears for Fears, so full of intellectual outreach and engagement with the world. Music videos were often artistic, political, challenging and politically “out there”. Wham was the first western band to tour China, where the authorities were deeply fearful of huge assemblies for political reasons.

I was a bit too old for his music but two things I always liked about George Michael: he put his money where his mouth was in a major contract dispute with Sony – losing lots of $$ for years in the name of creative independence.

He also said something that still resonates with me as an Adam fan: when people (like my “hard rock-loving” brother who simply walked away from the dinner table yesterday to show his disgust for any sentimental discussion of pop crap) ridiculed him as a teen idol he insisted that teenage girls were due as much respect as anybody else. At the time, it was a rare thought for an artist to make; an imaginative defense of himself and his fans. It made me think (I was 40 and not into pop music at the time.)

This thought resonated again, many years later, when we Glamberts started getting flack. It leads to the obvious question of why there is so much “status-ing” of artists based on the demographics of their fandoms? People who judge artists in that manner are actually, on some level, prioritizing something tangential over the art itself – style, fashion, identity.

This isn’t only true of pop music: it’s true in opera and classical music. It’s true in film, books, dance, theatre, most forms of culture. It is as much of a blind spot for critics as it is for ordinary audience-goers.

Almost always, in every field, the admiration of women (especially younger women) is assumed to be of lesser value.

    Why is that?

P.S. You can see it in the George Michael memorials from “serious” critics. Even as people are mourning him, they are talking about his post-Faith career (the “serious” part; not the part that made him beloved of millions.)

    Anyway…

So much sadness of late as we keep losing icons but our boy has done so well this year and we can hope it will continue moving forward. Hoping for many opportunities in 2017(!)to regroup and join each other on our journey with Adam.

Debbie Reynolds, Mother of Carrie Fisher and Spirited Star of ‘Singin’ in the Rain,’ Dies at 84 (Report) http://thr.cm/R3wJlj

  44. ultimathule says:
  45. TLKC says:

Very sad to hear about Debbie Reynolds. The Movie channel is showing “old Hollywood” films non-stop this week. I’ve been taping the ones I like and getting up to watch them in the early morning. It’s been so nice to escape into a happier, simpler time and her passing has just made that time seem even more remote.

They are capping it off this weekend with the “That’s Entertainment” film series. Debbie is featured in the 3rd one in case anyone wants to catch it.

P.S. Debbie’s in TE #1, too: Singing in the Rain, the film that made her famous. What the heck – might as well tape all 3 TE’s.

  46. TLKC says:

Hmmmm…. methinks Adam just let something slip.

On second look, it appears that the designer was talking and the “our” refers to his company.

  47. TLKC says:

Thanks so much, AL, for “Adam Without Tree”, a true work of art and my vote for January 2017 header.

  48. TLKC says:

Just thought of this: her whole life Carrie Fisher lived in her parents’ shadow and, now, the same thing has happened in her death. She will always be the epic and memorable Princess Leia but her mother was an undisputable icon and there is so much “feel good” footage to dig into.

Carrie wrote two books “Postcards from the Edge” which is terrific and “Surrender the Pink”, which I didn’t read, but her explanation of the title is beyond hilarious: go to the 7:45 minute mark of this video interview with Arsenio Hall:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OtTwYYHQCs

Her sense of humor is such that you can imagine her welcoming her mother on the other side with “You had to do it, didn’t you?”

  49. TLKC says:

Very selfishly checked the film log for Star Wars – episode VIII comes out May 2017. Most likely, Carrie had completed filming.
