He is an international superstar, actor, theater and musical actor, but above all he is one thing: singer! Adam Lambert is one of the top stars of the pop business and has not been a real icon since working with Queen. As part of the release of his new album “Velvet”, we had the opportunity to speak to Adam.
An article by Dominik Huttner – I was already a big Adam fan when American Idol was around. His debut album “For Your Entertainment” and the resulting single “Whataya Want from Me” are still my favorites. That was 11 years ago – a lot has happened in the meantime. Adam released further new albums in 2012 and 2015, played a part in the musical drama “Glee” at times, tried his hand on the cinema screen in “Bohemian Rhapsody” and has been a recurring tour member of QUEEN since 2012.
In the interview Adam mainly tells me about his latest work “Velvet”, the resulting world of its own, but also about his way to become the artist he is today!
Adam, it’s been quite a while and I’m very glad that you are finally back with new music! Your album “The Original High” is now 5 years ago. Did you need the time to reinvent yourself?
I am so happy that ‘Velvet’ has finally appeared. I wanted to create my own world around this project. Wanted to work with many different people and try many different sounds. Ultimately, I use a lot more “live instruments” on this album and I see things completely differently than before. I am personally at a different point in my life than five years ago and have gained a lot of new experience and I think you can hear that on the new album.
You started releasing some of your new songs on an EP called “VELVET: Side A” last year. What was the motivation behind releasing an EP instead of an album? Did you want to wait for your fans’ reactions to new music first?
I wanted to create a whole new world in which these new songs exist – the “Velvet” world. I then published the EP as a kind of “foretaste” to make the experience of the “Velvet World” even more exciting and long-lasting. I mean, the songs were already finished at the time and everything fit together perfectly, so why not !?
On March 20th it was finally the ‘big day’ and you finally released your latest studio album “VELVET”. How does it feel to be back in the game again?
It’s just totally exciting and the reactions have been incredible! I’m just so happy that the songs are out now and people can enjoy them. I hope they bring some joy and hope to everyone out there in these crazy times.
I was allowed to listen to the new album before many others and I already love the new sound! For me, “VELVET” sounds like great emotions and stories to be told. It sounds like the anthems of the late 70s / early 80s. How would you describe your new style yourself?
Yes, I was really inspired by the music of the 70s and 80s because I grew up with it. I tried to make these retro sounds sound a bit modern and wanted to give the whole album a touch of ‘vintage’. It shouldn’t be a planned, firm style, most things have arisen in the process of creation. It’s just “velvety …”.
Velvet also has this pinch of disco. This indescribable feeling that makes you just want to dance. The album feels good. What do you think about the “disco revolution” in 2020?
I love it! At the moment you can hear many artists who incorporate the disco sound into the music, such as Dua Lipa or Jessie Ware. It definitely puts me in a good mood and builds up, and I think that’s exactly what people really need at the moment.
In addition to the music, you are also an excellent actor and I particularly liked you in Glee. Does acting help you slip into different roles when it comes to trying out new genres?
Yes. I think especially at the beginning of my career it helped me a lot because my music was more theathral. But the older I got, the more confident I became and knew what I wanted and what I liked and was able to separate things quite well at some point. I still love acting and I would like to devote more time to it in the future.
Some people probably don’t know that you started your career as an actor in various musicals almost 20 years ago. Did you already plan to be successful as a solo artist at some point or was it more of a fate?
I just love being on stage and the theater was my first big passion. I never really planned to devote myself to music until American Idol suddenly came around the corner. It was just an incredible opportunity and well … here I am.
When you talk about fate, you have to talk about working with QUEEN. I think it’s one of those things you never dare to dream of. Can you explain what it feels like to be part of this legend?
It is a real honor and an absolute privilege to be on stage with Brian and Roger and to celebrate their legacy and their music. Every single time I am allowed to be on stage with them, it is just something incredibly special.
You will soon be on tour with QUEEN (at the time of the interview, the tour was still planned for 2020), before you take the stage again in autumn with your very own show. Do you miss being alone on tour? And what can we expect from the upcoming shows?
Yes, it’s been a long time since I played a show alone. Of course it is absolutely wonderful to perform with QUEEN, no question. But I am so full of anticipation and so excited to finally be able to bring the world of “VELVET” on stage and to play my new songs for my fans. We have already planned so many special things for the tour !!
Adam, I would like to ask you my last question. A question I got from your fans on Instagram. What do you think (as a former guest judge) who will become America’s “Next Drag Superstar” (note: winner * on the show ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’)?
