Adam-LunchLA
Having wrapped up the overseas “We Are Glamily” tour, Adam and Glamily are back in LA for some well-deserved rest. Later this month, Adam will be in Miami Beach to headline their Gay Pride event. It seems to be the first of his “a-concert-a-month” series while he works on new music. Above we see Adam enjoying his downtime lunching with Sutan. Photo from Just Jared.
Enjoy the chat!

TLKC I told my story. Here is what I said.

My father and I just went on a trip to Finland to visit friends. While there my friend and I went to Adam’s concert as we are both big fans. My father is not a music fan and did not go. We happened to be staying at the same hotel as Adam and Sauli over the weekend before going on to Kotka. My father is very conservative, very religious and very republican. He really believes being gay is a choice. I cannot disagree with him more on this. However, he met my friends that live in Finland and others from around the world that came to see Adam’s concert. He saw Adam and Sauli in the hotel and watched them and listened to us about what a great person he is and how he has really brought all types of people from all different cultures together and how great his mission is: unity, love and acceptance.
Toward the end of the trip my dad and I started some real conversations about DOMA, Adam, being gay, etc. More meaningful than any I have ever had with him before. One thing about my dad however, he has always been a very staunch supporter of equal rights as far a race but did not extended them to gay rights. After one of our talks he looks at me and says. “I think Adam and Sauli should be able to get married. Why not?” He changed his mind because of Adam and his mission, not because he was a fan. I could have never changed his mind but Adam did, and if he can do that, change people’s minds one at a time, then he is making this world a better place and that is something that should be celebrated. I just wish there were more people and celebrities like him, going through life being positive, being accepting and being himself.

Me too, luval. How anyone thinks spewing such hate furthers their opinion or cause is beyond me. I remember a long time ago Adam asked on Twitter if he should actively campaign for the gay cause, or if he was more effective “just being, doing his thing.” Most said “just be.” And just being, all over the world, in interviews, daily life, performing, I believe has changed and opened thousands and thousands of minds and perceptions. That will accelerate change, and that is why the Glaad award is happening. That article will sadden Adam. Stupid prick. Hubby reminded me that the guy was Neil Rogers’ attorney – he called him Norma Kent. Neil was pretty bitter too – I couldn’t stand him.

  3. Ron says:

    Dear aely,

I find myself deeply effected and saddened by the Norm Kent article.

Thank you for leaving a comment there and sharing your eloquently expressed response with us here.

    Beautifully done! Rose

  4. riskylady says:

    Beautifully written, aely.

  5. riskylady says:

Just posted first of nephew’s videos on concert thread. Sounds good!

  6. LadyNorth says:

aely, thank you for sharing your beautiful story in public and here!

This article made so many people sad Frown The bitterness and hatred behind it is so obvious that most people disagree with it, whether Adam fans or not. But I hate the fact that Adam has to face this from the member of his own community Big Frown And I agree riskylady, this certainly doesn’t do good for LGBT movement and it’s goals… Going to bed now sad and disappointed.

  7. rs says:

I am more disturbed by this article than by all the homophobic vitriol that has been spewed at Adam for the past four years. Aside from the fact that the guy is an ignorant jerk who is only reflecting badly on himself and the community he purports to represent, I feel so bad that Adam will read it and will be hurt, much more, because of its source. This has to cast a negative shadow on what was such a joyful weekend in Miami, when he finally felt totally embraced by the Gay community.

I only hope that when he reads the hundreds of supporting comments, including your wonderful description of your father’s “conversion” aely, as well as the subsequent article by the guy who first interviewed him, that Adam will come to realize what an inconsequential piece of shit this Norm Kent guy is, not worthy of worrying his beautiful head over.

  8. Kradamour says:

I am more disturbed by this article than by all the homophobic vitriol that has been spewed at Adam for the past four years.

The article made me sick to my stomach, and it takes a lot to upset me to that extent.
That he was so evil to someone who was there during his absence.
That he was so unprofessional as to criticize his staff who was acting in his absence (I hope they all quit.)
That he was so uninformed, and still felt that he had the right to write.
I cannot imagine that this guy could ever have been more evil to LGBT oppressors than he is to Adam…and this to one of his own. And one who has NEVER expressed anything but joy about being who he is, who has never expressed sorrow that he is gay, who has never in any way hidden who he is, who has always embraced his sexuality and offered himself as a role model.
I did not post a response…there are already enough, and the point has been made (and eloquently by several of our ALLers).
I love the rebuttal/defense that was just posted.
I am waiting for whosits apology/recantation.
This is so much worse than the “not gay enough” garbage from OUT magazine at the beginning of Adam’s post-idol career…but you know something? It is so over the top f*cking STUPID that it is almost a caricature, and not to be taken seriously. I hope that Adam will get a good laugh out of it, even though that laugh will be tinged with pain. After my initial shock and horror, it struck me as so bad that it is amusing, and I did chuckle … through my clenched teeth.
Now and forever, this article will stand alone as the single most iconic example of those (thankfully, decreasing numbers of) members of the gay community who are too eager to eat their own.

  9. galady says:

It’s bad enough to read the disgusting comments on almost every mainstream article about Adam but having to read that vile editorial in the gay press was heartbreaking.

  10. riskylady says:

Just posted second of cher‘s nephew’s videos on the concert thread. Great sound!!!
ETA: Never mind, just saw that our ever-diligent AL already grabbed it.
Check them out, guys – the sound is great. Wipe your mind clean with Adam’s voice…..

    krad: you forgot something: Poop

  12. ultimathule says:

Think Krad is correct – it’s so over-the-top and nasty that it is hard to take it seriously. Man looks like a damn fool – so out-of-touch with the young and so oblivious of Adam’s influence. Well, he’s getting an earful now – lol.

More publicity for the boy, too.

  13. Ron says:

    A second Star Crush article:

    http://starcrush.com/south-florida-gay-news-associate-publisher-rebuttal-adam-lambert/

Finally, after highlighting all the charity work Adam does, Parsley eloquently concluded:

“It’s important for celebrities to be out and proud and GLAAD recognizes that, and that’s why it gives awards to celebrities.

Now I won’t apologize for my publisher’s opinion, as some suggested I do, because he has a right to express it, just as I have a right to disagree with it – wholeheartedly”.

Meanwhile, the Twitter debate rages on.

It’s also worth noting that as of this writing, the SFGN website has once again crashed under the weight of Adam Lambert fan traffic (something the publisher’s original op-ed bitched about). So perhaps that’s retribution in and of itself.

  14. glambotgram says:

Kradamour I so agree with you, I read the article at work today on my break. I have been sick to my stomach ever since. What an complete jerk and how completely misinformed this guy is. Now I am waiting for Asshat Perez to get a hold of this and make it even worse.

I feel for Adam but I hope if he sees the article that he takes the time to read the outpouring of love in the comments.

  17. Calgary says:

I don’t think Adam will be that upset. He has often talked about the fact that those in “the community” don’t always support each other. I can sort of see Norm Kent’s point – some Johnny-come-lately pop star gets a big award when dozens if not hundreds of others (like Mr. Kent)have been busting their butts in relative obscurity for the cause for years, if not decades. My guess is Adam might even agree that there are others more worthy. But Mr. Kent, a much older, and therefore, one would hope, wiser, man, has lost sight of the big picture. He has forgotten that life isn’t always fair, and that his community has benefited greatly from Adam’s fame. A young guy, sprung into international fame, forced by the media to become a representative for a cause. He did have a choice. All celebrities’ publicists have lists of things interviewers are not allowed to ask. Adam chose not to hide but to stand up for his beliefs. And to do it with such grace. Poor Mr. Kent. His mean-spiritedness has done nothing but embarrass himself and make Adam look even better.

  19. ultimathule says:

    Great post, Calgary.

  20. rs says:

I have been thinking that this Norm guy is of a generation who has been living with homophobia and paranoia for so long that he can’t comprehend someone like Adam who is so comfortable with his sexuality and is helping to bring it into the mainstream and create a post-gay world where someone’s sexuality isn’t an issue. It probably threatens him so he belittles and mocks Adam.

I like this response by Steve Gray

    http://www.therealstevegray.com/2013/04/gay-publisher-norm-kent-likes-food-and-sports-but-not-adam-lambert/

And with that, it is off to bed. It is really very late.

  36. milwlovesadam says:

MJ is referred to in the replies of the original piece. And not very nicely.

“Eating their own” is Adam’s comment about the gay community that sticks in my mind. And old school vs younger gays.

I am not gay. I have several gay relatives, and friends. I always was open and accepting and liberal. BUT. My mind has been opened so wide by being Adam’s fan, I simply cannot put it into words. This fandom has changed my life in so many ways, again, I simply cannot express it.

Luv to you all. Kiss In Love Rose Rainbow Rainbow Rainbow

I’m popping popcorn, settling in for the night of on-line reading. Help yourselves, there’s enough to share. ( crunch ).

  37. aely says:

Wow, I really don’t think I have ever been this riled up about some worthless persons opinion in some stupid hardly known publication but, man, I am and it takes a lot to get me pissed off. I think I am going to open a bottle of champagne and watch one of jlurks DVD’s and celebrate Adam and his nominations in China and GLADD.
To hell with all the homophobic bullshit..Tomorrow I am going to find out a way to volunteer to do more than send money. Time to stop being pissed off and do something to effect change and do something to honor Adam and his mission.

  38. Kradamour says:

This fandom has changed my life in so many ways, again, I simply cannot express it.

But you do, mils. Every time you post, the person you are shines through. I have followed your posts for years now, and even though you were open minded in the beginning, that has expanded into what I would say in French, you have an “esprit ouvert”. Open spirit, more expansive than an open mind. Doesn’t really translate, it has subtle connotations.
I hope that it isn’t presumptious of me to say this.

I think that lots and lots of peeps have made that transition from open mind to open spirit…many, many more than have stayed put or dug in.

I think sometimes we have the tendency to substitute our emotions for Adams. I think Calgary and Rs are right. I think he’d be disgusted but not really sad. He’s mentioned before the problems some of gay community have voiced.
Adam came from a very accepting family, has stated he was not bullied in school, moved to a city with a large gay community that was welcoming and accepting. The main problems came when he tried to break into the music business. There is where the real discrimination, and non acceptance came. A brilliant singer and performer that couldn’t gain main stream music industry acceptance because he was gay and all they thought the music buyers would see is the gay not the performer. He has become a success but not as much as his talent deserves. Because he has always been who he is with no apologies he’s become a positive influence to many young people (and some of us older folks too) He may not have been in the trenches with some of the older gays but he definitely is helping the cause now being so visible. He really is helping the change that’s gonna come. The author of the article has his rights to his opinion but certainly could have worded it better. I’m sure it wasn’t his plan but he certainly did a good job of alienating readers and even some of his staff. Mad

I sent an email this evening to Norm Kent and got a reply: norm.kent@sfgn.com

    Thank you for your letter.

I will make an effort to learn more about his personal history and his extensive contribution to gay causes and report back on them.

I believe I said he was a remarkably talented singer worthy of his Billboard recognition but not worthy of an award for a lifetime of fighting for gay rights.

Perhaps you can find and list all his achievements for me.

It truly is sad when members of the gay community turn on their own. Gays are a very small percentage of the general population so you need all the allies you can get.

You have obviously never read the comments section in the mainstream media when they print an article about mr lambert. The comments are nasty, homophobic and cruel. This is the hatred adam lambert faces everyday. It would be wonderful if there was a safe haven for him in the gay community.

Very disappointed that you chose to print your rant. Maybe you should listen to the advice thumper’s mother gave him in Bambi “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say nothing at all!”
